EDITORS NOTES
The only way a newcomer can participate in this unique race is by invitation. It is believed that there is a five-year waiting list but do not be discouraged. Put your name down with the organisers and you may be lucky enough to run this race before you die. The good news is that one third of the field are novices. There have been times when the event has had to be delayed or the route has had to be changed due to heavy snowfalls. In the interests of safety it is important that the seconding vehicles are able to reach athletes at the designated feeding stations which are approximately 10 kilometres apart. You are required to carry an emergency space blanket and rescue whistle, together with a water container of at least 750 millilitre capacity.
You must also be prepared to walk through mountain streams, contend with snow, icy conditions, wet roads and strong winds. The race is not recommended for unfit runners or for those who are not prepared to cover rough terrain. The race atmosphere is extremely festive both before and after the race. It is common for the temperature at the start to be sub-zero, usually around an icy -10°C.
