Most of the races in Cape Town have a special magical appeal, and the Cape Peninsula Marathon is no exception. Starting in Main Road, opposite the Cape Town Stadium, Green Point the route winds through the streets of Cape Town’s city centre. History pours out onto the street as you pass landmark after landmark.
Soon enough the city is left behind as the route proceeds through the southern suburbs. Along Main Road, past Woodstock, then Salt River and on to Observatory, so named for the establishment of the South African Astronomical Observatory in the suburb. The hills on this section of the marathon are hardly challenging. From the suburbs, the stretch to Lakeside, Muizenberg and the first sight of the sea, at 28 kilometres, is flat and straight.
Along this road there is space to settle into a nice rhythm and collect your composure for the final run to South Africa’s naval port. Now, with the ocean close by and the Hottentots Holland Mountains in the misty distance, the race reveals its special appeal. You will experience St James' gaudy charm and, as you run on to Fish Hoek, the generous enthusiasm of spectators buoys many a flagging spirit. The road presents some challenge as you pass through Clovelly, now with Simon’s Town and the end in sight. Beware of the final climb to the Naval Sports Ground; every great run, it seems, must have a final sting in the tail. The half marathon starts outside the Bergvliet Sports Club in Children's Way. From there you run into Ladies' Mile and then along Main Road. From here the race follows the marathon route to the finish.
