ABSA Run Your City GQEBERHA 10K - Kenya's Langat and Chepkorir secure victory
Sunday 07 April 2024
Kenya's Langat and Chepkorir secure victory at Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K
Kenya's Vincent Kibet Langat and Diana Chepkorir claimed top honors in the men’s and women’s races, respectively, at the 2nd annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on Sunday, 7 April 2024. Langat boasted a winning time of 28:01 and Chepkorir 31:15.
At the age of 37, veteran South African top runner Elroy Gelant is showing no signs of slowing down. Gelant produced another polished performance clocking 28:17 to take second place on the day. SA 10km national record holder Precious Mashele claimed the third position as he crossed the finish line two seconds behind his countryman.
Speaking moments after the race, Gelant said he had a good race despite the challenging weather conditions.
"I knew it was going to be difficult because of the wind. The first 2km we were into the wind, which meant that the race was going to be tactical," explained the Boxer Athletics Club top runner.
"I told myself I want to run a confident race as I wanted to get something out of it. It’s a competitive run. In the last 400m, I nearly gave it to my teammate (Precious Mashele), but I thought no let me go for it as there was something left in me. In the end, it was a very confident run despite the wind," he said after passing Mashele metres from the finish line to claim the runner’s up position.
A mark of just how fast the second half of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K was, is that even though the leading men only passed the halfway mark in 14:47, eleven men ended up breaking the 29-minute barrier.
Stillwater Sports MD and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series Michael Meyer says these results show just how the standard of running in SA has improved since the series began inviting world class athletes to compete in SA over 10km.
"We've witnessed a remarkable improvement in the standard of running in South Africa since we started inviting world-class athletes to compete in our 10km events. This has not only raised the level of competition but also inspired local athletes to achieve new heights in their performances,” says Meyer.
In the women’s race Kenya’s Diana Chepkorir dominated as she led from gun to tape to win in 31:15 ahead of her compatriot Nancy Sang who crossed the finish line in 31:39, while Ethiopia’s Selam Gebre claimed the final podium position in 31:42. Lesotho’s Blandina Makatisi set a new national record with her fifth place 32:05 finish, while Glenrose Xaba was the highest placed South African after stopping the clock in 33:04 for sixth position.
“Well done to all that participated in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K and joined Team Absa Walk Run on Strava. A huge congratulations to all the winners. It was inspiring to see so many people come together, with many different reasons for running, push themselves to achieve their individual goals," said Jabulile Nsibanyoni, Head of Sponsorships, Brand, and Marketing. “Your stories have inspired us all, and we are immensely grateful for your contributions to our event. Thank you to our colleagues, volunteers, partner sponsors, and organisers who made this event possible.”

ABSA Run Your City GQEBERHA 10K - Xaba eyes second Sub-32 10km
Wednesday 03 April 2024
Xaba eyes second Sub-32 10km at Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K
Glenrose Xaba will be targeting only the second sub-32-minute 10km of her career when she lines up for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K this coming Sunday, 7 April 2024.
Xaba was the first South African home, placing 4th overall in a then personal best time of 32:23 in the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in 2023. Despite failing to achieve her target of finishing inside the top 30 at the World Cross Country Championships in Serbia on Sunday 31 March this year, Xaba remains bullish about her prospects of running faster than she ever has before over 10km.
“I’m looking forward to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K to run a good time and have a good race. I hope the conditions will be good. I can be happy if I can run a PB since I have 31:55. So I would be happy with anything around 31:40 or 31:50. I’m really looking forward to having a good race because the conditions in Gqeberha are always good and the vibe and atmosphere is always entertaining,” said the diminutive Xaba who improved on that 32:23 with a 31:55 clocking last June.
The multiple SA 10 000m champion, who also won the national 10km title on 10 March before taking 32nd position in the senior women’s 10km race in Belgrade, admits that she has had a busy start to the year. But Xaba credits her coaches Caster Semenya and Ledile Semenya for putting a new strength training regime into place that allows her to bounce back quickly from the exertions of hard racing.
“I’ve been doing strength training and I also have a physio who has been helping me with massages as well. I have a good support system called ‘Power to Health’ that helps me to recover the body very quickly so that I can stay injury free. And then I also do more mileage so that I can last longer,” she explained.
While a new 10km lifetime best is on the cards, Xaba will have to keep an eye on her competition as well. Also on the start list is Cacisile Sosibo who beat Xaba when she produced a lifetime best 1:09:31 to finish in tenth position overall and as the first South African in the 21,1km race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Latvia last October.
With a personal best of 32:58 run in Nelson Mandela Bay in 2022, Sosibo is hopeful that she will run well again in ‘The Friendly City’. “Gqeberha is always good to me whenever I run there. I like the air there. The place always treats me well. I’m not sure what happens but sometimes I just feel a burst of energy and decide to chase the East Africans,” says Sosibo.
Given how well they usually perform in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, both Xaba and Sosibo will be buoyed by the news that 29:56 10km runner Diana Chepkorir of Kenya has confirmed her participation. The presence of a strong East African in the field has Xaba fired up about the possibility of running a fast time.
“They motivate us,” says Xaba. “They’ll make us run very fast because we are also looking to get the monetary incentives which are available to SA Athletes for running fast times. This will help us get closer to Elana Meyer’s national record.”
"We're thrilled to have Glenrose Xaba and Cacisile Sosibo join the lineup for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Their participation adds a thrilling dynamic to the event, especially as they go up against a world-class athlete like Diana Chepkorir. This race promises to be an exciting clash of talent, showcasing the best of South African and international running."

Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series secures sub-30-minute Diana Chepkorir to race GQEBERHA 10K
Following the remarkable achievements of the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, which included the victory of former 10km world record holder Yalemzerf Yehualaw (Ethiopia) in Durban, the event organizers are thrilled to announce another exciting addition to the 2024 lineup. Kenya’s Diana Chepkorir, a sub-30-minute 10km performer, will make her South African debut at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on Sunday, 7 April.
“I decided to come to South Africa because I heard that fast times can be run there. I heard about the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series and have seen the results online. First of all, I heard that South Africa is a nice place to be. Secondly that the organisation is very welcoming and last, but not least, that it has fast races and as I am trying to always improve myself, I am happy to come and give it a try on 7th April,” she explained.
Chepkorir heads to ‘The Friendly City’ in the shape of her life after setting a jaw-dropping 29:56 lifetime best at the
FACSA Castellón 10K in February during what was her first official 10km road race outside of Kenya. Her transition from a steeplechaser to a road runner is bearing fruit and the Kenyan is aiming to go even faster at the first Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race of 2024.
“I am still very happy that I could run my first race outside of Kenya below 30 minutes. Recovery was good and I was immediately motivated to continue my training. I want to run fast again, depending on the day. But I am feeling well and want to still make use of that shape,” she said.
Stillwater Sports' Managing Director and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, Michael Meyer, considers the participation of athletes like Yalemzerf Yehualaw and Diana Chepkorir in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series as beneficial, not just for road running, but for elevating the profile of South African sport as a whole.
"We are thrilled to celebrate Diana Chepkorir’s SA debut at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in 2024,” says Meyer. “Her participation adds an exciting dynamic to the race and underscores our commitment to bringing top talent to South Africa. Athletes like Chepkorir not only inspire us with their performances but also help elevate the standard of competition, which is crucial for the growth of the sport in our country. We look forward to seeing her compete and wish her the best of luck on race day."

ABSA Run Your City GQEBERHA 10K - Join a fun Inner-City Clean Up
Monday 01 April 2024
Residents invited to join a fun Inner-City Clean Up ahead of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K
Gqeberha residents are invited to join a lively "Inner-City Clean Up" starting at 08:30 (until 10:00) from the Absa Branch on Govan Mbeki Avenue (Port Elizabeth Central, Gqeberha) on Saturday, April 6, 2024. This event sets the stage for the highly anticipated Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on Sunday (7 April).
"Not only does the inner-city clean-up contribute to a cleaner, more vibrant city but it also fosters a sense of community pride and unity," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "It's a wonderful way for residents to come together and prepare the ‘Friendly City’ for an action filled Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K."
“The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series will provide all volunteers with refuse bags and gloves,” continues Meyer. “Once filled, these bags will be collected and disposed of. Your participation not only helps us care for the environment but also contributes to making Gqeberha a more sustainable city. As a token of appreciation, Absa will treat volunteers to delicious breakfast packs and refreshing beverages after the clean-up.”
Single Use Plastic (SUP) Management Campaign: The Gqeberha inner-city ‘Clean Up’ aligns seamlessly with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series’ SUP Management Campaign, which targets an 85% reduction in single-use plastics across all five events.
“Our vision is to create a mass participation road running series that is environmentally conscious, showcasing the beauty of our host cities while honoring their communities, talents, and the sport itself,” emphasizes Meyer. “Building on our partnership with #RunClean, we will once again have designated 'litter zones' along the route to maintain a litter-free environment. Additionally, we urge participants to support #ICarryMyOwn by bringing their own water bottles to reduce waste. These water bottles can be filled at the refreshment stations on route. We're thrilled to be back in the stunning city of Gqeberha and can’t wait to #RunYourCity alongside thousands of runners.”

ABSA Run Your City GQEBERHA 10K
Tuesday 26 March 2024
Gelant targets maiden Sub-28, while Kenya's Maxon Kipngetich prepares for Absa RYC GQEBERHA 10K debut
Veteran South African distance runner Elroy Gelant has set his sights on running a maiden sub-28-minute clocking at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on Sunday 7 April 2024.
“My goal for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K will be to run a sub-28. I’m looking forward to it. All of my training paces are set for a sub-28. It will depend on the body and how it responds on the day, but I would really love to run a PB and better my time of 28:04,” said Gelant.
The two-time Olympian is rightly confident after producing 2:08:56 at the Sevilla Marathon last month to come within 46 seconds of automatic qualification for what would be a third consecutive Olympic appearance. Gelant says his 42km performance has laid a good base for the year ahead.
“I’m really looking forward to this year,” admits Gelant. “I started off my season with a marathon PB. That laid a foundation for me going forward in 2024 because it showed me that I can achieve what I put my mind to. I’m looking forward to a positive year”.
It is a bold target for a man who at 37 years of age is entering the twilight of his career. But after a fabulous 2023 season that saw him set new personal bests over 10km and the half marathon (1:00:56), Gelant is feeling confident, particularly with the confirmation that several 27-minute performers such as Precious Mashele, Thabang Mosiako, and Kabelo Mulaudzi will run the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K.
“My performance over the last six months is just a blessing,” states Gelant. “To have run three PB’s, especially at this age is a blessing. I think we have a few phenomenal athletes that can pull me to that sub-28. It’s going to be a fantastic race with an adapted route, so we are looking forward to some fast times.”
One of those phenomenal athletes to whom Gelant alludes is Kenya’s Maxon Kipngetich. The 10 000m athlete leads the East African charge in his first official road race. After his compatriot Daniel Ebenyo won last year’s inaugural race in 27:21, Kipngetich says he would love to follow in the fast footsteps of his more illustrious countryman.
“It is a good race,” says Kipngetich. “I’ve seen people like Ebenyo run and it opened their careers. I want the same. I want to expand my career to run from 5km to 21km in the near future. I want to expand my range starting here with the 10km. I’m aiming to set a good start in the Absa race. 27:50 - 27:59 will be a good start for me.”
"Elroy Gelant and Maxon Kipngetich bring a wealth of experience and talent to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Their presence not only raises the level of competition but also adds a layer of excitement and prestige to the event, highlighting its growing reputation as a top-tier road race. We're also thrilled to witness Maxon's debut in the series and look forward to celebrating his milestone in Gqeberha."

After taking second place at the ASA 10km Championships on Sunday 10 March, Kabelo Mulaudzi has confirmed that his next road race will be the much-anticipated Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on Sunday 7 April 2024.
On the back of a breakthrough 2023 season which saw him run a maiden sub-28-minute clocking to win the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K (in July), Mulaudzi is in demand, but says that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series remains his main focus in 2024.
“My plan is to focus on the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. If I manage to qualify for the Olympic Games that will be a bonus for me. I don’t want to confuse my season - my main priority is to do well in these Absa races.”
In order to do well though, Mulaudzi will have to get the better of the likes of national 10km record holder Precious Mashele who has also confirmed his participation. Mashele produced 27:35 during the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race in “The Friendly City” of Gqeberha last April, which is more than 20 seconds faster that Mulaudzi’s 27:56 personal best.
The last time that Mulaudzi and Mashele faced off in a 10km road race was during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K (in August 2023), where the younger Mulaudzi triumphed over his friend and rival by just two seconds in a sprint finish. However, this time around, Mulaudzi is less focused on his competitors than he is on the stopwatch and taking advantage of the SA Athlete Prize Incentive Scheme which rewards athletes with anything from R60 000 to R200 000 depending on how fast they can run.
In closing, Mulaudzi adds: “Our standard of 10km running is improving. The bonuses that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race organisers have announced for South African runners are a motivation for us to work harder and run faster. I think we can run 27 minutes again. My plan though is to improve on my personal best of 27:56 and if I can run the SA Record it would be a bonus.”
"We are thrilled to see top athletes like Kabelo Mulaudzi and Precious Mashele go head-to-head at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in 2024," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Their rivalry promises an action-packed race that will keep fans on the edge of their seats. With the impressive prize purse and SA athlete incentives on offer, we expect to see some incredible performances that showcase the best of South African middle-distance running."

ABSA Run Your City GQEBERHA 10K
Tuesday 05 March 2024
Mashele, Sang set sights on 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K
After setting a national record of 27:35 when he took second place at the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in 2023, Precious Mashele has confirmed his participation in 2024 when the iconic race returns to the friendly city come Sunday 7 April.
As he prepares to qualify for his second consecutive Olympic Games appearance in Paris later this year, the multiple SA Champion says that the 2023 race in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has a special place in
his heart
“I love the atmosphere of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. There are lots of top runners and social runners who encourage us when we run. I have good memories because I won in Durban in 2021 and I ran a national record in Gqeberha last year. The plan is to run faster than last year.”
Apart from his participation in Gqeberha, the man who will represent South Africa over 5000m at the upcoming African Games in Ghana says that the entire Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series of races (there are five events in total) will form an important part of his overall 2024 season.
“I would like to thank Stillwater Sports (the organisers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series) for giving us the opportunity to race again. These races help us to run fast times. We’re happy because the series is here again in 2024, and we are looking forward to running personal bests. Running in the Olympics will help me run fast at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series races. If I qualify for the Olympics it will give me an advantage when I run the Absa races,” he explained.
While Mashele leads the South African charge at the first Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race of the year, there will once again be a strong East African contingent. In the women’s race, Kenya’s Nancy Sang will lineup at the start in Beach Road.
“I feel happy and glad to be part of the race. Although it will be my first time, I know it’s an important event in Africa where good performances have been made in past years,” said Sang on her inclusion to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K start-list.
Better known as a steeplechase runner with an impressive personal best of 9:56.0 set at altitude in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi in 2018, Sang intends to use the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series to launch her international career as a road runner.
“I feel it is the right time to venture into road running. I had a good 10km debut of 31:09 but now I want more. I am preparing well for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K. If conditions are good, the goal is to break the 31-minute barrier.”
"The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series provides a premier platform for athletes, both local and from abroad, to showcase world-class performances on African soil," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "In 2023, the Series witnessed remarkable victories by Kenyan World Championships 10,000m silver medalist, Daniel Ebenyo, in Gqeberha, and world record holder Yalemzerf Yehualaw of Ethiopia in Durban. These are just two examples from an impressive lineup of international athletes who graced the series. The 2024 edition promises to be equally exciting, as we continue to attract the finest talent from around the globe, elevating the standard of 10km running on the African continent."

ABSA RUN YOUR CITY

SA Athlete Prize Incentives announced for 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series
Following the recent announcement of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series' unprecedented, combined Prize Purse of R 1,560,000.00 in 2024, Stillwater Sports, the organisers of South Africa’s acclaimed road running series, have also unveiled an impressive "SA Athlete Prize Incentive Schedule” for the 2024 edition of the series.
The “SA Athlete Prize Incentive Schedule” is applicable to all five iconic races in the series in 2024 and will offer bonuses for exceptional performances. In the men’s category, bonuses start for times faster than 28 minutes, with a substantial R 200,000.00 bonus awaiting anyone who breaks the 27-minute barrier. For women, bonuses will start for times faster than 32:08 minutes, with a remarkable R200,000.00 incentive being awarded if the 30:23 barrier is broken.
“The standard of South African running rises each year at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Our goal is to continue this trend by rewarding outstanding performances at each of the five Absa RUN YOUR CITY Races in 2024, ultimately elevating the competitiveness of South African middle-distance running. We believe that these incentives will inspire even faster times on South African soil, with the potential for a sub-27-minute 10km in the men’s race and even a sub-32:08-minute 10km in the women’s race.”
“To further elevate the excitement, an additional R50k is on the table for any South African athlete who breaks the current SA 10km record,” adds Meyer. “Our objective is to enable South Africa's elite athletes to make a living without needing to go abroad. We are confident that this incentive will attract considerable attention from South Africa's top athletes, and we are excited to see them showcase their talent at all five of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series events in 2024.”
“The SA athlete prize incentives definitely motivate local athletes to push harder and improve performances,” confirms Elroy Gelant. “It also acts as a reward for our hard work and dedication. Lastly it attracts experienced athletes/runners to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series races, resulting in more exciting and competitive 10km races. I find that the bonus incentives serve as a great motivation for me to push myself and achieve my best possible time during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series races. I believe that these incentives can help all athletes perform better and reach their full potential, ultimately leading to improved overall performances in the race. Running fast times can lead to additional financial rewards, such as cash bonuses that can be used to cover training expenses.”
Gelant adds: “Breaking the South African 10km record would be a significant personal achievement for me. It would represent a validation of all the hard work and training that I, along with my coach, family, training mates, friends, and Boxer Athletics Club have dedicated over the years. Achieving this milestone would be a major boost to my career and could propel me towards even greater success, especially with the 2024 Olympics coming up.”
"The SA athlete incentives serve as a powerful motivator for us athletes, encouraging us to push our limits and compete at an international level," explains Tayla Kavanagh. "They inspire me to aim for faster times and provide a rewarding recognition for achieving my goals. Breaking the current SA Record would be a dream come true for me, as it has remained unbroken for many years. Being the one to finally break this longstanding record would be an incredible achievement."
Kabelo Mulaudzi shares Elroy and Tayla’s sentiments that the SA Athlete Prize Incentive Schedule is a great motivator to run faster. “It’s great that the Incentive Schedule is open to All SA Athletes, so the faster you run the more rewards you receive,” says Mulaudzi. “Qualifying for the incentives would mean a lot to me because a financial boost always brings a lot of changes and stability. The funds would help me prepare for races and support my family. All athletes prepare to win and achieve greater heights. Achieving the SA Record would be a bonus for me.”

By providing a substantial prize purse, we aim to inspire athletes to arrive fully prepared and determined to give their best performance on race day. We are proud to be able to recognize and reward these athletes for their dedication and support."
