ABSA Run Your City Tshwane - Xaba aims to cement her dominance
Tuesday 20 August 2024
Xaba aims to cement her dominance with an Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series win in Tshwane
South African national record holder Glenrose Xaba is gearing up for her fourth race of the month as she prepares to compete in the highly anticipated Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on Sunday, 25 August 2024.
Xaba, the reigning SA champion in the 5000m and 10,000m events, has been in exceptional form over the past eight weeks. She set a new SA 10km record of 31:12 at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on 7 July and followed up with three consecutive podium finishes during Women’s Month. Reflecting on her recent success, Xaba credits her entire team for playing a crucial role in her ability to recover quickly between races, allowing her to maintain peak performance.
“I have been working with Power2Health. They help athletes to recover using various methods such as ice baths, oxygen and ozone. I started working with them in 2020 when I had a knee problem. Now they understand my body because I have been attending their sessions consistently. I usually attend three recovery sessions a week when I am busy racing. It helps me a lot,” Xaba explained.
Her quick recovery between intense efforts means that the woman who won both the TSHWANE SPAR WOMEN’S 10KM CHALLENGE on 3 August and the Johannesburg leg of the Totalsports Women’s Race on 17 August, will once again be expected to take the fight to the East Africans at the fourth Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series event of 2024. Run on a hilly course at altitude, the woman affectionately known as SuperCharger takes on Lesotho 10km record holder Neheng Khatala, Olympian Blandina Makatisi also of The Mountain Kingdom, perennial podium finisher Cacisile Sosibo and Ethiopia’s Ebste Atagoud Btaw.
“When it comes to hills, I destroy them,” said Xaba jokingly after crushing her opposition to take line honours at the Johannesburg leg of the Totalsports Women’s Race (32:56) by over a minute from runner-up Diniya Abaraya of Ethiopia.
“I’m very happy. It shows that if you believe in yourself, work hard, dedicate yourself and listen to what your coach says and follow the programme you’ll do much better.”
The men’s race in the nation’s capital is expected to be a little more open. Defending champion Kabelo Mulaudzi will face-off against last year’s runner-up and SA 10km record holder (27:35) Precious Mashele, perennial sub-28-minute 10km performer Thabang Mosiako as well as Olympian Elroy Gelant who has dominated the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. Mulaudzi who produced the second sub-28-minute 10km clocking of his career (27:53), when he took second place at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in July, wrapped up his Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K preparation with a dominant victory in the men’s 4km race at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country Championships in Kagiso on Saturday 17 August and is ready for action.
“My training has gone well after my run at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K,” said Mulaudzi. “I have been running the Central Gauteng Athletics Cross Country League races, so my fitness is still at the same level. The Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K course is actually not so tough for me. Last year, I ran well there, so I think the route is okay. I actually find the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K course to be the toughest of the series.”
"We are excited to host the fourth event of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K, on Sunday, 25 August,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “This race will bring together top local and international talent, including Glenrose Xaba, Neheng Khatala, Kabelo Mulaudzi, Precious Mashele, Elroy Gelant and Thabang Mosiako. Their participation underscores the event's status as a premier competition in South African athletics. Strong competition like this pushes the boundaries of what's possible and inspires everyone involved, from elite athletes to everyday runners, to strive for their personal best. We can't wait to see these incredible athletes in action and to witness the thrilling race that will unfold on the streets of Tshwane."

ABSA Run Your City - Tshwane
Tuesday 13 August 2024
Olympian Elroy Gelant confirmed for Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K
Olympian Elroy Gelant will bring his star power to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on Sunday, 25 August 2024.
While reflecting on his Olympic performance, Elroy Gelant highlighted the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series as a crucial factor in his remarkable showing at the Games. Competing in his third Olympics in Paris, the 37-year-old clocked an impressive 2:09:07 on Saturday, 10 August, securing a celebrated 11th place finish—the best by a South African man since Josiah Thugwane's gold medal victory at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
“I’m really satisfied with my race. I’m very happy with my performance. The course was brutal in terms of the hills,” said Gelant. “The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series assisted me a lot in terms of leg speed. I was relaxed during the first few kilometres during the first half of the race because of the leg speed I obtained during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, which formed part of my whole Olympic structure.”
The Boxer Athletic Club top runner has dominated the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series taking second place at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in April, second again at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in May in a maiden sub-28-minute finish (27:54) and victory at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in a lifetime best 27:47.
Feeling no ill-effects from the third sub 2:10 marathon clocking of 2024, Gelant is committed to lining up in the series once again at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on 25 August where he took fourth position during last year’s inaugural event.
“I’m good. I’m niggle free and I’m looking forward to the rest of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” confirms Gelant. “I’m doing some easy jogging for now. Maybe the first one (Absa RYC TSHWANE 10K) I can start by finding my rhythm again and then go full force in the last one (Absa RYC JOBURG 10K) on 24 September. I’m happy with my buildup.”
"We are thrilled to welcome Elroy Gelant back to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K after his incredible performance representing South Africa in the Marathon at the Olympics,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “Watching Elroy compete on the world stage was truly inspiring, and it's a privilege to have him line up with us in Tshwane. Elroy is a true legend of the sport and has done so much for South African athletics. His participation not only elevates the competition but also inspires the next generation of runners. We can't wait to see him in action again!"EVENT INFORMATION: 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series

ABSA Run Your City - Tshwane - Khatala targets podium finish
Tuesday 06 August 2024
Khatala targets podium finish at Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K
After coming within just two seconds of breaking her own national record at the Totalsports Women's Race in Durban on Sunday, Neheng Khatala (Lesotho) is brimming with confidence as she prepares for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on Sunday 25 August.
Lesotho’s fastest female 10km athlete clocked 32:03 to claim third place during the Women’s only race in Durban on Sunday 4 August, just four weeks after running a career best 32:01 for fifth place at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K.
“Durban has always been a special place for me to race. The supportive crowd, the climate, and the course suit my running style. The energy from the spectators and the coastal atmosphere really help me perform at my best here.”
Those two performances, run at sea level on flat and fast courses in eThekwini, have left the North-West University student feeling upbeat about her chances of claiming a podium finish at the fourth of five Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series races scheduled for the last Sunday of Women’s Month.
“My target for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K is to secure a top-three finish and aim for a personal best on this course. The hills and altitude will definitely play a role in my strategy. I’ve been working closely with my coach, Andrew Booyens, to fine-tune my strategy and focus on my strengths. We’ve been emphasizing speed work, hill training and endurance to ensure I’m in peak condition for each race.”
Having claimed fifth place during last year’s inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K against a quality field of Southern and East African athletes, Khatala who has been in better 10km shape this season, can justifiably target a podium finish.
Cacisile Sosibo will also be looking to improve on her 2023 showing in the nation’s capital. The Boxer Athletic Club athlete who claimed a top ten finish in the half marathon at the World Road Running Championships in the Latvian city of Riga last October, has confirmed her participation as she looks to break into the top five following the sixth position she achieved twelve months ago.
And after stopping the clock in 33:27 to end up as the first South African at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban just 24 hours after taking third place at the TSHWANE SPAR WOMEN’S 10KM CHALLENGE, Sosibo underlined her status as one of the country’s most improved athletes of the last 18 months. She says her coach Michael Seme must take the credit.
“It's all about the way he treats me. He treats me like his own child. When he asks me to dig deep and do what he says until the time is right- I do it. He even advises me about what to do during the race.”
"We are excited to welcome Lesotho's National Record Holder Neheng Khatala and Boxer Athletic Club top runner Cacisile Sosibo to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on August 25th," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Both athletes have been delivering fantastic performances, showcasing remarkable dedication and talent. It’s a privilege to witness their improvements firsthand, and we are excited to see them compete at the Tshwane event. Their participation not only elevates the level of competition but also inspires all runners to push their limits and achieve their best."

ABSA Run Your City - Tshwane - Gautrain partners with Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series
Monday 05 August 2024
Gautrain partners with Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series for seamless Race Day travel between Tshwane and Joburg
In 2024, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is set to further elevate the runner’s experience in Tshwane and Joburg by welcoming the Gautrain as the Official Transport Partner. The events in Tshwane and Joburg will take place in the vibrant cities on Sunday, 25 August 2024, and Tuesday, 24 September 2024, respectively.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gautrain as the official transport partner of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “Gautrain's commitment to providing and optimizing an integrated, innovative public transport system is truly impressive, offering a reliable, efficient, and safe mode of travel. Like the Gautrain, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series also supports people on the move and is dedicated to making every aspect of race day memorable and enjoyable. This partnership is a significant win for the series, as it will ensure that runners enjoy a seamless and hassle-free journey to and from the two prestigious races.”
“With the participant’s experience being our top priority, we strive to create an environment where runners, whether elite or social, can focus entirely on their performance and enjoyment without worrying about logistical challenges,” continues Meyer. “Partnering with Gautrain enhances this experience by making travel more convenient and secure, allowing participants to arrive at the starting line relaxed and ready to give their best.”
In closing, Meyer adds: “This fantastic partnership is just another way of giving back to the entrants. Together with Gautrain, we look forward to hosting two memorable events and can’t wait to #RunYourCity in Tshwane and Joburg.”
According to Tshepo Kgobe, Chief Executive Officer of the Gautrain Management Agency, this partnership will make Gautrain an even more integral part of people's daily lives and the mobility of choice in the province, not only for work, business, and school, but also for large-scale social, sport, and lifestyle events. “This partnership aligns with the Agency’s purpose to transform spaces, people, and the economy through mobility. The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series includes two races in Gauteng that are easily accessible via the Gautrain. Runners from Johannesburg will be able to travel to Pretoria for the race on 25 August, and vice versa for the race in Johannesburg on 24 September, making it easy for runners to participate in both events.”
“We want people to experience the convenience of the Gautrain for work, play, and running,” adds Kgobe. “The Gautrain will ensure that you arrive at the race hassle-free and on time, and then provide a relaxed trip home to recover.”

ABSA Run Your City - Tshwane
Tuesday 30 July 2024
Defending Champion Kabelo Mulaudzi stays cool under pressure ahead of Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K
After achieving the fastest 10km time of his career with a second-place finish at the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on 7 July 2024, Kabelo Mulaudzi is confident in his chances of successfully defending his title at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on Sunday, 25 August.
Mulaudzi’s confidence soared with his 27:53 finish in Durban, especially after an injury threatened to derail his 2024 season.
“That sub-28 in Durban boosted my confidence because it shows me that I’m still at the same level as last year. I broke my personal best by three seconds. So even when I train, I’m happy and I train with confidence,” explained Mulaudzi.
In many ways, 2024 is mirroring 2023 for the 26-year-old. Last year, the Boxer Athletic Club’s top runner achieved a sub-28-minute victory in Durban before clinching the win in the nation’s capital just over a month later. Mulaudzi says winning the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K in a thrilling sprint finish against Precious Mashele remains one of the highlights of his career.
“It was not easy to sprint against Precious Mashele because I learned so much from him when we trained together at Zoo Lake. But last year was the best season ever in my career.”
With last year’s victory in mind, the 2023 SA 10km Cross Country Champion will line up at the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K as the defending champion. This tag might make some shrink under the weight of expectation, but not Mulaudzi, who is looking forward to the challenge.
“I don’t feel any pressure to win the race because any race is a new race. I respect each athlete I’m racing against. If I defend my title, it will be a bonus for me. I would be happy to finish on the podium again, like I did in Durban. I’m going to try my best. I’m looking forward to running again in Tshwane.”
"We are excited to welcome Kabelo Mulaudzi back to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K in August to defend his title," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Kabelo always arrives at an event ready to race, and this was clearly evident in Durban in July where he finished the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in under 28 minutes. We wish him the best of luck as he competes in Tshwane. It’s fantastic to see South Africa’s elite athletes performing so well at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, and Kabelo is a shining example of the talent and determination that make these events so special."

ABSA Run Your City - Tshwane - Cancer survivor excited to #RunYourCity in Joburg and Tshwane
Monday 29 July 2024
Cancer survivor excited to #RunYourCity in Joburg and Tshwane in support of CANSA Active
Nono Zwane, a cancer survivor from Centurion, has set an inspiring goal of raising R10,000 for CANSA, as a CANSA Active Ambassador by taking on the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K on Sunday, 25 August 2024, and the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K on Tuesday, 24 September 2024.
At 36, Zwane received the devastating news that she had breast cancer. Despite the initial shock, she was determined to get through it, and today she stands proudly cancer-free. To celebrate her journey, she is taking action to support others facing similar experiences when faced with a cancer diagnosis.
“I am proof that early detection and support can make a difference,” says Zwane. “I’m celebrating my survival by raising awareness and funds for CANSA at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K and Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K. I chose these events because CANSA is already the charity of the series and because running events promote health and wellness, aligning perfectly with CANSA's mission to educate about cancer and encourage leading a balanced lifestyle. Participating in these runs emphasizes the importance of fitness in lowering the cancer risk. As a breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand the importance of education, support, and access to care. CANSA provides a vital lifeline to those affected by cancer, offering a range of services from emotional support to practical assistance. By supporting CANSA you’re helping to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.”
“My journey has taught me that cancer doesn’t discriminate, but with the right support, we can overcome even the toughest challenges,” continues Zwane. “That’s why I am calling on all runners and the friends and families of runners to support my cause. Let’s run together, raise awareness together, and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. With your support, we can create a wave of change, or in this case join the “Sea of Red” and impact countless lives. Please join me and let’s run towards a cancer-free future.”
In closing, Zwane adds: “I am really looking forward to experiencing the vibe, the atmosphere, and running with my husband. To every runner and walker taking on the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K and the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K, let’s lace up our shoes and hit the roads together. Let's run not just for ourselves, but for a greater purpose. Let's run in solidarity with those living with cancer, honouring their strength and resilience, in the face of adversity. Good luck, have fun, and may your strides be strong and your spirits high. #RunYourCity, embrace the challenge, and enjoy every moment of this incredible experience.”

Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series set to bring the vibe to the streets of Tshwane in August
The streets of Tshwane will be transformed into a playground of athletic prowess and community spirit on Sunday, 25 August 2024 when thousands of runners gather to be part of the action of the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K. Expect cheers, challenges, and a vibrant atmosphere that embodies the essence of Tshwane's running culture.
"The fourth event in a series of five, the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K, is set to paint the streets of Tshwane red on August 25th," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Entrants can look forward to a day filled with exciting racing combined with a fun-filled on-route experience. The atmosphere at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is unrivaled, featuring lively sponsor activations such as the Absa High 5 Zone, the thrilling PUMA FOREVER FASTER 100 Sprint, the energetic Chery Cheer Zone, refreshing Coca-Cola hydration stations, and the entertaining Castle Lite Zone and AVIS Mobility Zone. We’ve also introduced some new activations that Tshwane runners are guaranteed to love. Be sure to snap some selfies at the 'Unicorn Razzle Dazzle’ activation, 'Luminous Legends,' and 'Love for Local,' among others. Each on-route activation will capture the vibrant spirit of Tshwane and promises to leave lasting memories at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K in 2024. We can’t wait to #RunYourCity with you in August."
Jabulile Nsibanyoni, Absa’s Head of Sponsorships, Brand, and Marketing, expressed her enthusiasm for the entertainment planned along the Tshwane race route. “We are dedicated to creating unforgettable community experiences. This event embodies our commitment by showcasing a vibrant celebration of Tshwane's diversity and heritage. The entertainment along the route aims to highlight the city's unique traditions and spirit, offering participants and spectators a colourful tapestry of cultural performances to enjoy.”
"We’re excited to introduce the new PUMA FOREVER FASTER 100 sprint to the energetic streets of Tshwane," says Rae Trew-Browne, PUMA Run Train Marketing Manager. "Our activation is designed to spark runners' competitive edge and drive them toward new personal bests. To sweeten the challenge and add motivation, we’re providing in-store discount vouchers for participants in the PUMA FOREVER FASTER 100 sprint section: a 30% discount for those who sprint under 15 seconds, a 20% discount for under 20 seconds, and a 15% discount for under 25 seconds. This bonus incentive is meant to encourage runners to get out of their comfort zones and achieve their personal bests. Be sure to conserve some energy for the final stretch of the route, where the PUMA FOREVER FASTER 100 sprint awaits."
"Chery is delighted to help enhance the incredible experience at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY TSHWANE 10K in August," says Mr. Tony Liu, Executive Deputy GM of Chery South Africa. "The excitement kicks off with the highly anticipated Chery Tiggo 4 Pro LiT draw, where all entrants have a chance to become the proud owner of this stylish vehicle. We look forward to welcoming another runner to the Chery family at this event. But the fun doesn't stop there; our Chery Cheer Zone on the route aims to uplift and energize runners as they make their way to the finish line. Participants can expect a memorable experience that embodies Chery's commitment to promoting active and healthy communities. We look forward to cheering on all the runners as they take on this iconic race in the Jacaranda city."
