Kenya's Christine Njoki continues her winning streak in Durban at the Totalsports Women's Race

Kenya's Christine Njoki, the current holder of the SA all-comers record, claimed a dominating victory at the Totalsports Women's Race in Durban on Sunday 4 August 2024.

Starting and finishing at the Suncoast Casino on Snell Parade, the streets of Durban buzzed with excitement as a record field of 7500 runners gathered to partake in one of Durban’s most iconic Women’s Month celebrations.

Celebrating her Totalsports Women’s Race debut, this was only Christine Njoki's second appearance in Durban. Just under a month ago, on July 7, she secured the SA all-comers record in the city. Although the record eluded her this time, she finished the race in an impressive 31 minutes, just 23 seconds shy of her personal best and the SA all-comers record.

“My race was good. My target was to run under 30 minutes, but we had some wind on the course which made it tough. As athletes, we have to fight. I’m happy with my performance as today’s result isn’t far from my personal best,” says Njoki. “This was my second time running in Durban. I enjoy running here; the weather is good, everything is good. I am grateful to have run with so many women and feel that I have proven my mental and physical toughness. It’s great to race with other women and encourage each other. I want to thank the event organizers and Durban for hosting me. I hope to come back in 2025.”

Ethiopia’s Selam Gebre came in second in 32:01, with Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala rounding off the podium in 32:03, a mere 2 seconds shy of the Lesotho National Record.

Cacisile Sosibo was the first South African to cross the finish line, securing 6th place with a time of 33:27. Tayla Kavanagh followed in 7th place, and Jenet Mbhele finished in 8th.

"Durban provided the perfect backdrop for the first Totalsports Women’s Race of 2024,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “The Elite Women’s 10km race featured a strong field of top contenders, both local and international. It was fantastic to see these elite athletes go head-to-head in a women-only race. Congratulations to Christine Njoki on claiming gold among such fierce competition. Watching the elite race in action is truly inspiring. However, the event wasn’t just for the elites; participants from all walks of life came together to celebrate women and support PinkDrive. We had a wonderful day in Durban celebrating elite performances, friendship, family, health, and, most importantly, women.”

SA All-Comers Record Holder, Christine Njoki sets her sights on the Totalsports Women's Race in Durban

Exactly one month after setting a new South African all-comers record and personal best at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, Kenya’s Christine Nalimo Njoki will be aiming for an even more impressive performance when she competes in one of South Africa’s most iconic Women’s Month celebrations, the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban, this coming Sunday, 04 August 2024.

In setting a new South African all-comers record in July this year, the 24-year-old clocked in at 30:37, marking the fastest 10km time of her career.

"I enjoyed my last race in South Africa and always appreciate competing with fellow women to prove my mental and physical toughness,” says Njoki. “So, I am excited to once again race in South Africa, but this time at a women’s-only event. Women-only races are very important as they allow women to showcase their dominance in the sport independently and encourage others to compete at the same level. It is a great honor for female runners to compete among themselves and prove their skill. The race is a positive gesture and encouraging for young girls in society.”

She confirms, “I am looking forward to performing well in the race. My goal is to be on the podium."

In closing, Njoki had the following message to share: "I want to tell all women competing that it is a new era for us to run faster, challenge ourselves, and even break new records."

Njoki will need to put her best foot forward on race day, as there is an impressive lineup of athletes ready to compete including the likes of: Ethiopia’s Debash Desta (10km PB 30:58), Selam Gebre (10km PB 31:42), Diniya Abaraya (10km PB 32:03), and Ebste Btaw (10km PB 32:12), Kenya’s Marion Chepkoech, and South Africa’s Tayla Kavanagh (10km PB 32:10), to name just a few.

Xaba set to shine at Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town and Joburg

New SA 10km record holder, Glenrose Xaba, is in the best shape of her life and ready to prove it this Women’s Month when she lines up at the iconic Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town on Friday, 09 August 2024, and in Joburg on Saturday, 17 August 2024.

No stranger to the Totalsports Women’s Race, Xaba has claimed the top spot on the podium in Durban once and in Joburg twice during her illustrious career. In 2024, for the first time ever, the three races will be hosted across three major cities on three separate days in August, allowing Xaba to compete in more than one race. Unfortunately, the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban is not on her schedule this year, as "Supercharge," as she’s affectionately known, already had a prior commitment.

Setting the stage for an unforgettable Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town and Joburg, Xaba is energised by her recent achievement after breaking the national 10km record at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K with a remarkable time of 31:12. This incredible achievement shaves one second off the previous record set by Elana Meyer in October 2001.

“I love that the Totalsports Women’s Race honors women and encourages them to stay healthy and fit,” says Xaba. “This race is close to my heart because it takes place during Women’s Month and supports PinkDrive, an organisation that helps those diagnosed with cancer. I also appreciate that it’s a women’s-only race, providing a vital opportunity for women to network and support each other in sports.”

In 2024, the Totalsports Women’s Race will feature an impressive, combined prize purse of R412,500. This purse will be split evenly across the three races, with each race receiving a total of R137,500. Prize money will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in the Open Category, with the winner receiving R30,000, the runner-up R20,000, and the third-place finisher R15,000. Additionally, prize money will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the Junior, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+ categories.

“Having a substantial prize purse is very important as it will encourage elite female athletes to participate in the race, while encouraging upcoming athletes to keep to the short distances like 10km,” confirms Xaba. “My goal at both races will be to have fun with fellow athletes, while networking and spending time with all the supporters. I am looking forward to a big crowd and big vibes.”

Ethiopia’s Diniya Kedir Abaraya set for triple the action at the 2024 Totalsports Women’s Race

No stranger to South African shores, Ethiopia’s Diniya Kedir Abaraya will make her Totalsports Women’s Race debut in 2024. She'll do so in style by participating in all three iconic races: Durban on Sunday, August 4th; Cape Town on Friday, August 9th; and Joburg on Saturday, August 17th.

Boasting a personal best 10km time of 32:03 set in Durban in 2023 at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, Abaraya has had a busy start to 2024 in South Africa. She secured 2nd place at the 10km SPAR Women’s Grand Prix Series in Cape Town in March, 9th at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K in April, and 2nd at the Mandela Bay Half Marathon in June. As a standout runner for Nedbank Running Club, Abaraya is hoping to improve her 10km performance when she lines up at South Africa’s most iconic Women’s Month celebration, the Totalsports Women’s Race, in Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg.

“My coach told me that the race is very fast and flat, so I decided to compete,” admits Abaraya. “The Totalsports Women’s Race is hosted in honor of women, and I truly believe that women are respected in South Africa, so I am very happy to be part of this event. It’s important to host women-only races to encourage and motivate women to be their best. My goal at these races is to set a new personal best. I am really looking forward to running my best time.”

In closing Abaraya adds: “I encourage all women to keep working hard and stand up for your rights. I look forward to being part of the Women’s Month celebrations in South Africa.”

Abaraya will be joined at all three races by her fellow club runner, Ebste Btaw, while Tadu Nare will join the duo for the Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town.

Ebste Atagoud Btaw will not only make her Totalsports Women’s Race debut in 2024 but the Durban event will be her first international race.

“I am part of the Nedbank Running Club’s Ethiopian Development Team. My coach and I decided to enter all three Totalsports Women’s Race events to achieve a fast time and gain the necessary exposure,” says Btaw. “My goal is to run faster than I did in Ethiopia. The Totalsports Women’s Race is an excellent opportunity for women to showcase their talent and perform well.”

Despite being new to international racing, Btaw already boasts an impressive 10km time of 32:12.

Nkosazana Daughter to headline Totalsports Women’s Race celebration in Joburg

Runners and walkers participating in the Totalsports Women’s Race (5km or 10km) in Johannesburg on Saturday, 17 August 2024 will be treated to an incredible live performance by South African singer and songwriter, Nkosazana Daughter.

“As an artist dedicated to empowering women, it means a lot to me that the organisers have invited me to entertain runners, walkers, and supporters at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Johannesburg,” says Nkosozana Daughter. “As a woman, I understand the challenges women face in fighting for their place in any industry and constantly having to "prove" they are equally deserving of certain spaces. Boohle excited to join the Totalsports Women’s Race celebrations in Durban

Runners participating in the highly anticipated Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban on Sunday, 4 August 2024 will be treated to a live performance by South African singer-songwriter Boohle.

Boohle is excited to be part of this iconic women’s celebration and looks forward to treating runners to her unique blend of amapiano, afro-house, afro-soul, and gospel music.

PinkDrive Ambassador proudly shares her story through the Totalsports Women's Race

Diagnosed with breast cancer a decade ago, Cindy van Wyk (56) has transformed from a survivor into an inspirational thriver. As a proud PinkDrive Ambassador, she eagerly looks forward to sharing her story with thousands of runners and walkers at the Totalsports Women’s Race this August.

“This year, I celebrate 10 years of gratitude and health since my breast cancer diagnosis, bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation in 2014,” says Van Wyk. “Over the past decade, I have transitioned from survivor to thriver, and became a dedicated PinkDrive ambassador. This journey has deepened my appreciation for the deep interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of community. Participating in the annual Totalsports Women’s Race is both a profound and empowering experience. It symbolizes triumph over adversity, with every step taken a testament to resilience, strength, and hope.”

“Joining the race alongside fellow survivors and supporters creates a powerful sense of community and solidarity, reminding each participant that they are not alone,” continues Van Wyk. “It is a celebration of life, a moment to honor those who fought bravely and lost, and an opportunity to inspire others battling the disease. For many, crossing the finish line is not just a physical achievement but a deeply emotional victory, symbolizing the endurance of the human spirit and the unwavering will to live life to the fullest.”

The organisers of the iconic Totalsports Women’s Race are thrilled to welcome Super Rent as the official logistics partner for South Africa’s premier Women’s Month Celebration.

Totalsports Women’s Race continues to Empower Women and support PinkDrive in 2024

Promising to be the biggest Women’s Month celebration yet, the Totalsports Women's Race proudly continues to empower women while supporting PinkDrive in 2024. The event is set to flood the streets of three major cities in an ocean of pink on Sunday, August 4^th in Durban, Friday, August 9^th in Cape Town, and Saturday, August 17^th in Johannesburg.

Impressive Prize Purse revealed for 2024 Totalsports Women’s Race

Stillwater Sports, the organisers of one of South Africa’s largest Women’s Month celebrations, are excited to announce that the iconic Totalsports Women’s Race will boast an impressive, combined prize purse of R 412,500.00 in 2024.

"We are excited to announce that the prize purse for the Totalsports Women's Race will more than double in 2024, underscoring our commitment to making this year's event truly exceptional," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. "With the race now spanning three separate days in three different cities, the level of action and excitement will be higher than ever. The prize purse will be split evenly between each of the three races, with each race being allocated a total of R137,500.00. Prize money will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in the Open Category, with the winner receiving R30,000, the runner-up R20,000, and the 3rd place finisher R15,000. Additionally, prize money will also be allocated to the top 3 finishers in the following categories: Junior, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+."

In closing Meyer adds: “We are proud to enhance the celebration of women by increasing the prize purse and attracting strong elite participation ensuring that this year's race is a memorable and empowering experience for all."

Totalsports Women’s Race expands into a month-long celebration in August 2024
South Africa’s largest Women’s Day celebration, the Totalsports Women’s Race, will triple the excitement in 2024 with the iconic event being celebrated in three major cities on three separate dates in the month of August. The festivities will begin in Durban on Sunday, August 4th, followed by Cape Town on Friday, August 9th, before culminating in Joburg on Saturday, August 17th.

"We're thrilled to triple the excitement of the Totalsports Women's Race in 2024 by hosting these three iconic events across three cities on three separate days," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. "Each city will have its day to shine as we deliver an exceptional road running experience. We're excited to share the race's spirit with diverse communities and empower women from all walks of life."
