RHODES RUN

THE RUN

Starting from Rhodes the route goes along the Bell River and into the Kloppers Hoek Valley, crossing the Bell River several times via causeways and low-level bridges. This is followed by an off-road section along footpaths and cattle/sheep trails to Mavis Bank. A steep one-in-three ascent takes you from the valley to the Lesotho Border checkpoint. The route then follows the Lesotho Border road through snowfields and past the ski slopes of Ben MacDhui, which reaches 3,001 metres above sea level.

The highest point of the run lies on this section when you pass Lesotho View at 2,670 metres above sea level. Snow, mud and strong headwinds may be encountered. After this the route goes onto the Hooggenoeg Ridge. There are no footpaths on this section and you follow the ridgeline south over Hooggenoeg Point to the next checkpoint. Extreme caution is required here as you run through terrain that is extremely uneven and rough underfoot with hidden rocks and holes. Along the final stage the route drops from the mountain plateau into the Carlisles Hoek Valley dropping sharply by several hundred metres per kilometre, before returning to Rhodes.

PRIZES AND GIVE-AWAYS

In the true spirit of trail running there are no financial prizes and other than a few floating trophies all runners are treated equally with the same pre- and post-race handouts, which in themselves are usually rather special.

EDITORS NOTES

EDITORS NOTES

The only way a newcomer can participate in this unique race is by invitation. It is believed that there is a five-year waiting list but do not be discouraged. Put your name down with the organisers and you may be lucky enough to run this race before you die. The good news is that one third of the field are novices. There have been times when the event has had to be delayed or the route has had to be changed due to heavy snowfalls. In the interests of safety it is important that the seconding vehicles are able to reach athletes at the designated feeding stations which are approximately 10 kilometres apart. You are required to carry an emergency space blanket and rescue whistle, together with a water container of at least 750 millilitre capacity.

You must also be prepared to walk through mountain streams, contend with snow, icy conditions, wet roads and strong winds. The race is not recommended for unfit runners or for those who are not prepared to cover rough terrain. The race atmosphere is extremely festive both before and after the race. It is common for the temperature at the start to be sub-zero, usually around an icy -10°C.
