The organisers honour Dan Luyt, a farmer who allowed the earlier events to be staged on his farmstead in the current Brackenfell/Old Paarl Road area. A popular feature of this race is the watermelons that go to all finishing participants.The event has been on the calendar for over seven dacades and is arguably one of the oldest in the Western Cape.
