Ebenyo crushes field as Chesang smashes All-Comers Record at Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo lived up to the billing as race favourite while Uganda’s Stella Chesang moved into new territory as she dragged compatriot, Jesca Chelangat to a sub 31min finish in the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May.
All ingredients were in place for fast times and exhilarating racing as a fast route, near perfect weather conditions and arguably the best field ever assembled on South African soil lined up at Woodbridge Island in Milnerton for the 9am start of the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Clear skies greeted the 10 000 runners as they wound there way from Milnerton to the CBD of Cape Town to finish outside the Absa building at the bottom of Long Street.
While the masses enjoyed the running experience along the coastline and were able to fly on the highway on their own two feet and not in a car, the elite upfront were creating a storm. As expected, defending champion, Daniel Simiu Ebenyo was aggressive from the start. In typical Ebenyo fashion, the 26-year-old took control of the race from the gun – even earlier than in 2021. Whereas in 2021, Ebenyo flew away from the field after 3km, in this year’s edition, he broke away from the bunch within the first kilometre.
Five kilometres came and went in 13:36 and the gap to the chasing pack was already 21 seconds. No one was able to catch the high-flying Kenyan as he entered the Mother City on his own. The revamped route proving to be every bit as fast as promised with less twists and turns and virtually no incline at all. Ebenyo took full advantage and was in full control of the race. At the 8km mark it appeared as if last year’s runner up, Isaac Kipkemboi, was beginning to close the gap. But any thoughts of a possible late charge were quickly put to bed as Ebenyo hit the final kilometre in Long Street and opened the afterburners to fly across the line in 27:34. Only Joshua Cheptegei has gone faster on South African soil with his All-Comers record of 27:16, clocked in Durban in 2018.
Behind him, Isaac Kipkemboi of Kenya had to play bridesmaid yet again, but the Kenyan was exceptionally happy with his 28:04 time. Having the race of his life, local runner Anthony Timothy Timoteus was the first South African over the line in 5th, clocking 28:29, shaving almost 20seconds off his personal best time (previously 28:46).
While Ebenyo was utterly dominant in the men’s race, the women’s race was an altogether different affair. Race favourite, Genzebe Dibaba, holder of four world records, a world champion and an Olympic silver medallist, went straight to the front. The goal, a sub 31min if not a sub 30min 10km. The Ethiopian has only graced the roads on two occasions, clocking 14:48 for 5km in Carlsbad, USA in 2016 and winning the Valencia Half Marathon in January this year in 65:18. But she would not have things her own way, as 2018 Commonwealth Games 10 000m champion, Stella Chesang, a 31:14 10km runner (Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, 2018), compatriot, Mercyline Chelangat (31:33) and defending champion, Jesca Chelangat, paid close attention to Dibaba. The women flew through 5km 15:15 before Dibaba started to push and opened a small gap over Chesang and the two Chelangats. But Chesang was having none of it, and quickly closed the gap and forged ahead. By 8km, Chesang was will in control of the race and ended with a massive personal best as she breasted the tape on 30:40 with Jesca Chelangat second in 30:48 – both breaking the All Comers record of 30:55 set by Stella Chepkuriu.
“I love racing in South Africa,” said Chesang after the race. “I set my previous best here in Durban and have always run well here. I was very happy with my run and know I am in good shape now. Breaking 31minutes was my target and I did that.”
“What a great showcase of the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Today was a true demonstration of what our campaign, Together we can be more, Siyabangena means. Through this race, we saw runners and walkers come out in numbers and become an active force for good, while working towards achieving their fitness goals. It was inspiring to see South Africans from all walks of life, young and old make their mark today. Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone who participated in the race, including all the Team Absa members who joined us on Strava - Our goal is to donate R1 for every km run by Team Absa members on Strava. We look forward to the next race in Kwa-Zulu Natal and hope to see colleagues, customers and community members joining us in July.” says Absa Managing Executive, Geoff Lee.

Genzebe Dibaba descends on Cape Town for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
In what has to be the biggest coupe in the history of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series and the history of South African road running, the organisers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K announced today that Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba, arguably one of the best female athletes in the world and holder of four world records and two world bests, will line up on Sunday 15 May 2022.
“We are extremely excited to have Genzebe race in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “Since we embarked on this journey in 2015 our goal was always to bring the world’s best to race the best in South Africa on home soil and by bringing out Genzebe, we have been able to secure one of the best athletes in the world. Her CV and pedigree speak for itself. So, we are really excited about her coming to race here in South Africa and are confident that we will see the fastest women’s time ever seen on South African soil.”
Dibaba holds the World Record in the 1500m (3:50.07, run in Monaco on 17 July) as well as four world records on the indoor circuit (mile – 4:13.31; Stockholm 2016/3000m – 8:16.60; Stockholm 2014/5000m – 14.18.86; Stockholm 2015). Since 2012, Dibaba has utterly dominated the world indoor circuit, picking up gold medals in the 1500m (2012/2018), and the 3000m (2014/2016/2018).
Showing just how versatile and lethal she is, Dibaba has won medals on the track and is also a two-time world cross country champion, winning the World U20 titles as a 17-year-old in 2008 and defending that title a year later. In only her second outing on the road, Dibaba won the Valencia Half Marathon Trinidad Alfonso EDP in 2020, clocking an astounding 65:18 – the 6th fastest time in the world that year.
Now Dibaba brings that versatility and speed to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May. Boasting a best of 14:48 for the 5km (Carlsbad 2015) and a 14:15.41 in the 5000m (Paris, 2015), Dibaba has all the credentials and ingredients to make a monumental impact over the 10km.
With weather conditions predicted for Sunday as near perfect, minimum temperature of 11 and maximum of 21, no wind and sunny, Dibaba is expected to run the fastest time yet seen on South African soil over 10km. Expect the SA All comers record standing at 31:13 (Elana Meyer, Budapest 2001) to fall as it is anticipated that Dibaba will go under 31minutes and potentially threaten a sub 30min finishing time. At her best pace over the 5km, 2:57/km, Dibaba could come close to the current world record of 29:14, set by Yalemzerf Yehualaw in February this year.
Dibaba is the youngest of the three Dibaba sisters with eldest sister, Tirunesh a three-time Olympic Gold medallist and five-time world champion and second sister, Ejegayehu a silver medallist over the 10 000m in 2004 at the Olympics. Clearly running is in the genes and fireworks are expected from Genzebe on Sunday 15 May.
In a career that spans since 2007 as a Junior Athlete, Genzebe has amassed a total of 20 international medals, 13 of which are gold medals, 5 are silver and 2 bronze medals. Genzebe Dibaba is the most decorated athlete to have set foot on South African soil and her racing at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K is the biggest announcement in the history of South African road running.

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km
Tuesday 10 May 2022
World’s Best set to descend on the Mother City ready to battle at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
The Mother City is bracing itself for a “storm” of a different kind this week as an impressive contingent of the best athletes in the World as well as the best South Africa has to offer travel to Cape Town to compete in the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May 2022.
Leading the charge at this iconic race is the 2021 winner, Daniel Simiu Ebenyo who is currently the fourth fastest 10km runner in the world. Ebenyo became part of an elite group of athletes who has broken the 27min mark in the 10km after running 26:59 in Valencia in February this year. The 26-year-old Kenyan made the global running fraternity sit up and take notice of his pedigree when he qualified for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo by running a 12:55.88 in Luzern for the 5000m. Many had touted him as one of the danger men for the 12 and half lapper at the Games, but a fall in the qualifying rounds in Tokyo saw him robbed of potential glory.
Stung by that mishap, Ebenyo took to the streets with meaning by flying to a solo victory in the then Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K (now changed to the 10km distance). Within 4km Ebenyo had broken a stellar field and powered his way to a 34:01 win. Had it not been for a strong head wind in the first half of the race, many believe Ebenyo would have set a new world best over 12km.
Racing from the front and controlling the pace has become a trademark of Ebenyo. He did it in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K in 2021, he followed those same tactics in qualifying for the Olympics and repeated that strategy in winning the Valencia 10km in 26:59 earlier this year. Ebenyo has already indicated that he want’s nothing less than a fast time. “I know I am in great shape after going sub27 and I am looking for nothing less than another fast time and victory,” said Ebenyo. “I want to defend my title. I know the field is deep with Mokoka (Stephen Mokoka) and Isaac (Kipkemboi – 2nd in 2021) returning and if I want to win, I will need to run fast.”
Kipkemboi who finished second in 2021 is also back. The 2021 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K was the break through race for the young Kenyan. Kipkemboi was invited to the 2022 N Kolay Half Marathon in Istanbul in 2022 on the back of his Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K performance. The N Kolay Half Marathon is one of the most prestigious Half Marathons on the global circuit and receiving an invitation to the race is an indication that “you have arrived” on the world stage.
Add in Mogos Tuemay of Ethiopia who recently ran 60:11 for the Half Marathon and the international onslaught at the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K will be devastating.
But the South African contingent of Stephen Mokoka, Elroy Gelant, Precious Mashele and Mbuleli Mathanga are hungry to overturn the win of Ebenyo in 2021 and are hatching plans. All four are aware that a win will require going into new territory for all of them, even SA 10km Record Holder, Stephen Mokoka.
In 2015 Mokoka clocked 27:38 for the 10km SA Record in Manchester. To date he is the only South African other than Shadrack Hoff to have broken 28min and Mashele, Gelant and Mathanga know that it will take all of their ability to be able to join that elite group of athletes. Gelant is deep in preparation for the Olympic Games and is again targeting the 5000m. Given that he is the SA Record Holder (13:04.88) and wants to break 13min for the 5000m he knows that a sub 13min puts him in 27min and possibly even faster shape for the 10km. Mathanga has been included into the team that will head off to the Africa Championships in Mauritius in June in the 10 000m. That inclusion and the opportunity to race in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K have him setting his sights on a 27min time in the 10km on Sunday 15 May. If you want to be counted as an international danger man, running 28min low for the 10km is no longer the benchmark. Anything under 28 minutes is now the yard stick and the South African contingent are well aware of this and have made it clear that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K is the place to make an emphatic statement.
On the women’s front it looks no less impressive with 2018 Commonwealth Games 10 000m Gold Medallist, Stella Chesang returning to the Mother City for another stab at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Chesang in 2018 won the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K race, missing out on the All-Comers record by a mere second, clocking 31:14 to set a new Ugandan National Record. And improving her 10km best time by 30seconds. Countrywoman, Mercyline Chelangat, the 2017 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K winner and runner up behind Chesang in 2018, will line up on 15 May in Cape Town. Boasting a best of 31:33, Chelangat will be dangerous especially given her recent 69:24 Half Marathon in Poznan Poland. Chelangat was on course record pace in spite of the lack of pace setters and broke away from the field after 15km. It was only after the 18km mark that she fell off the course record pace due to a strong head wind.
2021 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K winner, Jesca Chelangat also returns on 15 May to defend her title as will last year’s runner up, Lesotho’s multiple National Record Holder and Olympian, Neheng Khatala.
Looking forward to May 15 is South Africa’s latest running sensation, Tayla Kavanagh. At 20, Kavanagh was the driving force in the 2021 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, which doubled as the SA 10Km Championships. Pushing from the gun, Kavanagh clocked 32:10, the fourth fastest ever time by a South African. Both her coach, Andrew Booyens, and Kavanagh are confident of being able to break the 32min mark. Joining her is Women’s Only 50km World Record Holder and third ever fastest 10km South African lady, Irvette van Zyl who ran her 32:06 PB at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2018.
The Mother City is bracing itself for a “storm” through the streets of Cape Town this coming Sunday 15 May as racing gets under way at 9am.

Capetonians invited to join a fun City Clean Up in the prelude to the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
The organisers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series are inviting Capetonians to a rewarding ‘City Clean Up’ on Saturday 14 May 2022. Starting at the Absa Building in Lower Long Street at 07:00, the aim is to help get the streets of the Mother City ready for the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K that will take place on Sunday (15 May).
“A proudly South African mass participation road run, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K encapsulates the splendour of the Mother City, the vibe and its people,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “We would like to invite all Capetonians to help us keep the city clean before, during and after hosting Cape Town’s most iconic 10km road race. The City Clean Up really is a fun way for everybody to get involved and help make a difference. We are excited to continue our partnership with PETCO and look forward to catching up with proud Capetonians on Saturday at the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up.”
PETCO is South Africa’s national industry body that is accountable for managing the PET plastic industry’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
“PETCO is excited to be involved with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up initiative,” says Kara Levy, PETCO Marketing Officer. “These types of initiatives allow us to move off the side-lines and into the thick of consumer and civic responsibility. Plastic touches us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is imperative that we come together to be part of true sustainability when the opportunity (such as this clean-up) presents itself. We all have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling. It is also important to raise awareness around responsible disposal of valuable recyclable materials which can be made into many useful things.”
“The important message that we would like to share is that there is no such thing as 'away',” continues Levy. “When we throw anything away it must go somewhere. A recent warning from the waste management industry stated that SA’s landfills are nearing ‘Day Zero’. As Capetonians, we understand only too well what that means, as we experienced the same warning with our water shortage. Capetonians can contribute positively by starting to separate their recyclables from their waste, like food waste and taking them to a drop-off site or leaving them in a clear bag for collectors on municipal collection day. This will help provide collectors with an income, while decreasing the filling of landfills with valuable recyclable materials.”
In support of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up, PETCO will sponsor gloves to protect those cleaning up and clear plastic bags made from recycled plastic (and are recyclable). This will ensure that the valuable recyclables and the litter will be easy to sort, and the recyclables can be responsibly taken to be recycled. To find a drop off site near you visit: https://petco.co.za/find-a-buy-back-centre/
Event Partner, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, will supply soft drinks for all Capetonians that participate in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up on Saturday.
“In conjunction with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K event organisers, partners and sponsors, we have embarked on a journey to reduce the usage of plastic at the event, including the race route at the hydration stations, by introducing cups for the products used to hydrate the runners,” says Dan Davis, Commercial Activations Lead Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages. “As Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, we are committed to creating a World Without Waste by reducing waste not only at the events and activations we are associated with, but also across our everyday business operations. Our purpose is to refresh the world and make a difference. We aim to create this through a more sustainable business and a better shared future, for our people and the communities we operate in.”

SA Record Holders confirmed for Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Multiple SA Record Holders and Olympians, Stephen Mokoka and Elroy Gelant have joined the impressive list of local and international athletes - including two sub 28min 10k athletes, the third fastest 10k athlete in the world in 2022 and a multiple South African champion – that will be looking to make their mark at the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May 2022.
“It gives us great pleasure to welcome both Elroy (Gelant) and Stephen (Mokoka) to the 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of SA’s leading 10km road running series. “Both Elroy and Stephen have been immensely loyal and have run some of their best times in the series. They have been role models for the next generation by showing up year in and year out, and we are beginning to see the fruition of them setting the bar with a new generation now coming through the ranks. Always ready to race, Stephen and Elroy are guaranteed to bring the action come race day. We are extremely proud to give SA’s elite runners the opportunity to face the World’s best runners here on home soil and can’t wait to see the action unfold.”
The third fastest athlete over 10km in 2022 is of course Daniel Simiu Ebenyo with his 26:59 run in Valencia. Ebenyo is also the defending champion in Cape Town. Ethiopia’s Mogos Tuemay has gone 27:50 (Herzogenaurach, 2021) and the SA Champion is Precious Mashele who won the 10km title for the third consecutive year at the Absa RYC DURBAN 10K in 2021. These three will now also be challenged by two of South Africa’s most dominant athletes of the last decade, Stephen Mokoka and Elroy Gelant.
It is Mokoka who owns the SA 10km and Half Marathon records of 27:38 (Manchester, 2015) and 59:36 (Gdynia, 2020), while Gelant holds the 5000m SA record of 13:04.88 (Hengelo, 2016). Both have represented South Africa on numerous occasions, and both have represented South Africa at the Olympic Games (Mokoka 2012 – Marathon; 2016 – 10 000m; 2021 – Tokyo Marathon/Gelant 2016 -5000m; 2021 – Marathon).
Mokoka was the last winner of the Absa RYC Series races, the ABSA RYC DURBAN 10K in 2019, before Covid put a hold on all things racing. He was beaten to the line by Precious Mashele on 31 October 2021 at the Absa RYC DURBAN 10K at the return of the Series but gained some measure of revenge as he finished third in the 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K (now the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K), defeating Mashele who, after a long season, had to settle for 9th.
Mokoka is deep in marathon preparation for the World Championships in Oregon in July and will use the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K as a tester to see where he is in his preparations. And while the 37-year-old has his sights firmly set on Eugene Oregon, it is guaranteed that he will once again deliver a show stopping performance on May 15 as Mokoka loves to race in the series. Since the inception of the series in 2015, Mokoka has run in 11 of the 13 races, finished on top of the podium twice (Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K – 2016/Absa RYC DURBAN 10K – 2019), never been outside of the top ten and been on the podium on six occasions (either second or third to go with the two wins).
“I love competing in the Absa RYC Series. We always have good international competition to keep us sharp and the series has always looked after us South African athletes. Not having to travel internationally to race against the best in the world has helped us a lot and you know that if you line up for any of the Absa RYC races, you need to be in shape if you want to perform,” said Mokoka. “I am looking forward to running in Cape Town on 15 May. It will be the 5th time I run in the race. While I am preparing for the World Marathon Championships, it will be good to show the youngsters I am still around and that it won’t be easy for them.”
Gelant was the only South African to finish the marathon at the 2021 Olympic Games. Since then he has raced sparingly and has decided to focus a bit more on the shorter distances in 2022. “I won’t be running a marathon this year,” said Gelant. “My focus is more on the shorter races.”
Gelant finished second at the 2022 Two Oceans Half Marathon, beaten by a mere 2seconds, but he has been showing good form on the track again claiming the silver medal in the 10 000m (28:25.32) and finishing 9th in the 5000m (14:11.76). Gelant likes to drive the race and set the pace from the front, and while he is up against a sub 27min athlete, you can expect Gelant to show up in the front back.
“I am looking forward to running the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K. It is a race that is very close to my heart. The 10km is really a good distance as there are not many top 10km races in the country that allow us to run fast and put down good times,” said Gelant. “I would really like a podium and my preparations are going well. As I am looking to run either the 5000m or 10 000m at the World Championships in July, the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K race will be perfect for my preparations and I expect to give a good showing on race day.”

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km
Thursday 28 April 2022
Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K incorporates the N1 in its 2022 route experience
The organizers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K have announced an exciting new route for the event, taking place on Sunday 15 May 2022, which incorporates new and exciting sections.
Starting in Woodbridge Island, Milnerton as per previous years, the route will run into Cape Town, with runners being able to cover the fastest and flattest route ever designed. This will include a 1,7km section of the N1 highway, giving runners a unique perspective of Cape Town, as they make their way to the finish in Long Street, in the city bowl.
“We are thrilled to include the N1 highway as part of the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K route in 2022. This inclusion will certainly make the event even more special for every single runner,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RYC Series. “We are the first event to be granted the privilege of running on the N1 for more than a kilometre. We are extremely thankful to the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Provincial Government for this incredible opportunity that is guaranteed to elevate the event experience on Sunday 15 May.”
The Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K will once again be a point-to-point race, but this year, with the inclusion of the section on the N1, it will be faster and flatter. Starting at Woodbridge Island in Milnerton, runners will be guided along Marine Drive before looping on the ramp onto the N1. The route will then proceed along the N1 highway until the vibrant spirit of Cape Town’s inner city is reached, with the finish ready to welcome runners in Lower Long Street. The fast flat route combined with the exceptionally strong field of local and international athletes is the perfect recipe for an extremely fast race both in the men’s and women’s category with a definite possibility of new 10km records being set.
Meyers adds: “With the best ever field of international and local runners assembled, the new route will certainly encourage them to run world class times. It is going to be extremely exciting to see how fast they can go.”
To date the 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K has confirmed the following elite field:
Men’s Race
- Precious Mashele (South Africa) – 2021 Absa RYC DURBAN 10K Champion
- Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (Kenya) - the 3rd fastest 10km runner in the world at present and 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN Champion
- Isaac Kipkemboi (Kenya)
- Mogos Tuemay (Ethiopia)
Women’s Race
- Glenrose Xaba (South Africa)
- Tayla Kavanagh (South Africa) – 2021 Absa RYC DURBAN 10K Champion
- Jesca Chelangat (Keyna) - 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN Champion
- Stella Chesang (Uganda)
- Mercyline Chelangat (Uganda)
- Diana Chesang (Kenya) - 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN third place finisher
- Neheng Khatala - Lesotho’s National 10k record holder
Although the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K features an impressive elite racing element, it remains a proudly South African, proudly Cape Town must do mass participation road running event that celebrates everything Cape Town - the vibe, the city and the people.
“We pride ourselves on hosting an event that not only allows SA’s elite athletes to compete against the world’s best runners on home soil, but also gives the everyday runner the opportunity to experience a world class event,” continues Meyer. “With Table Mountain as a magnificent backdrop, the route will incorporate Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks while featuring jam-packed lively performances from some of Cape Town’s leading performing arts groups. Our sponsors have also jumped at the opportunity to keep entrants entertained. Look forward to experiencing a vibrant Absa encouragement point, the fast-paced PUMA Beat Bolt Sprint and the fantastic ‘DHL Mile To Go’. We can’t wait to welcome entrants to the start line in just over two weeks’ time ready to #RunYourCity.”

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km
Tuesday 26 April 2022
Defending Champion, Jesca Chelangat returns to Absa RYC Series in Cape Town!
The 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY (RYC) CAPE TOWN 10K is fast shaping up to be the most explosive road race in South Africa with the announcement that the Kenyan running star, 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN defending champion, Jesca Chelangat will be back to defend her title. Her addition to the elite field of female athletes makes this one of the highest quality female running fields ever assembled on African soil, for a 10km race.
In addition to this exciting announcement, event organisers have also confirmed the following names: South Africa’s Tayla Kavanagh, Lesotho’s National 10k record holder, Neheng Khatala and 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN third place finisher, Diana Chesang of Kenya.
“We’re committed to continue adding to the already impressive list of athletes that will toe the line at the 7th edition of the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May,” confirms Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of SA’s leading 10km road running series. “To say that the women’s elite race is going to be world class and nail biting is an understatement and that is exactly what we want. We are proud to give SA’s elite runners the opportunity to face the World’s best runners here on home soil. We’d like to encourage all South Africans to show their support, either at the event or from their living rooms as the event will be broadcast live on Super Sport.”
Meyer adds: “We also want to encourage women of all levels and abilities to enter the event and run with these icons of female running. Show your support for the strength of women in the sport of running in Africa! There are very few sports in the world where the best in the world can line up at the start with athletes of all abilities. Road running is a fantastic sport in that way.”
With such an impressive line-up, one can only expect a race of the highest standards on Sunday 15 May. Jesca Chelangat took control of the 2021 race in the final 2km and surged away. In 2022 she will be a marked lady courtesy of that win. Chelangat has raced but once so far in 2022, running 35:25 at the Agnes Tirop Cross Country Classic over 10km in Eldoret on 12 February. As a result, she will enter Cape Town on very fresh legs, making her a dangerous contender. Boasting a 15:52.02 for 5000m (run at 1795m altitude in Nairobi) in 2021, Chelangat not only has raw speed, but also the endurance to back it up.
But Chelangat will not have it her own way come race day. Ugandans Stella Chesang (winner of the 2018 Absa RYC DURBAN 10K, setting a lifetime best of 31:14) and Mercyline Chelangat (winner of the 2017 Absa RYC DURBAN 10K) will mount a serious challenge, as will Tayla Kavanagh, Neheng Khatala and Diana Chesang.
Kavanagh ended 2021 on a high as she won the Absa RYC DURBAN 10K (incorporating the SA 10km Championships) with a massive personal best of 32:10, after leading the race from the gun. If anything, Kavanagh is in better shape than she was at the end of 2021 and the possibility of her becoming only the fourth lady to break 32min over the 10km distance are high indeed. “I am really excited about the race in Cape Town on May 15. I know there are some very good ladies coming to run and that makes me excited as it means I will be in a position to run better.”
Kavanagh in winning the Absa RYC DURBAN 10K, did all the hard work by running from the front and setting the pace from the gun. And still she managed to run 32:10 – the 5th best time ever by a South African over 10km. With the calibre of athletes coming to Cape Town from abroad, she is fully expecting to break that 32min barrier. “In Durban I did all the work. This time I won’t have to, and I know if I sit in the pack with these ladies, I can beat my best and look to go under 32minutes,” enthused the 20-year-old.
Kavanagh sees herself as a road runner and believes her best performances will come on the road, which is why she is so excited about the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K on May 15. Her preparations have shown she is well capable of going under 32minutes. After having an easy win in the Best of Best Durban 10k in 32:51, Kavanagh took to the track and has run in three 5000m races. This is the furthest she has raced on the track, clocking 16:03.52 in the KZNA Championships on 12 March, before winning the Athletes Academy Track Series 5000m race at Coetzenburg in a PB of 15:43.40 on 28 March and finishing 5th at the National Championships on 21 April, clocking 15:50.57. “I am not used to the track. It is a very different type of racing to the road. On the road, I like to find my rhythm and run. So I will find that rhythm and go with the ladies in Cape Town."
Also returning to Cape Town is 2021 Absa RYC DURBAN 10K and Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K runner up, Neheng Khatala from Lesotho. Khatala set a national record over 10km in finishing second in Durban in 2021, running 32:18, and according to coach Andrew Booyens, who also coaches Kavanagh, Khatala is in the shape of her life and is targeting a time around 31:30. “Neheng is in good shape. She won the Race to Equality Half Marathon in March in Johannesburg over a very tough course. Her training is going very well and she is in better shape than in 2021. So a 31:30, or thereabouts, is very much on the cards.”
And with 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K third place finisher, Diana Chesang, also in the mix, the 2022 edition of the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K has all the ingredients to be one of the most explosive road races yet seen on South African soil. Chesang (Diana) finished 7th in the Valencia 10km on 9 January, to clock a personal best time of 32:24.
The 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K arguably boasts one of the best ever women elite fields yet assembled in South Africa.

Wednesday 20 April 2022
Elite Field deepens as more impressive names are announced for the 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K!
The organisers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY (RYC) Series are excited to announce that Isaac Kipkemboi (Kenya),
Mogos Tuemay (Ethiopia) and South Africa’s Precious Mashele will join the arsenal of elite athletes that will line up on Sunday 15 May 2022 to take on the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K.
“We are excited to add three more exceptional athletes to our 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K line-up,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of SA’s leading 10km road running series. “Our goal is to have the World’s best runners compete against SA’s best on home soil. We are looking forward to an exceptionally fast race both in the men’s and women’s category. Having said this, we still have a few big names to announce before race day. Without letting the cat out of the bag, we also have an exciting announcement regarding the route which we will share soon.”
Runner up at the 2021 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K, Kipkemboi is the latest edition to the already stellar field announced for race day after the confirmation that defending champion and the 2022 world’s third fastest 10km runner, Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (Kenya) and Uganda’s female superstars, Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat will be returning to the Mother City.
Although Kipkemboi had to settle for second behind Ebenyo in the 2021 race which was the last to feature a 12km distance, before the race became a 10km distance in 2022, it did earn him an entry into this year’s N Kolay Istanbul Half Marathon, one of the most prestigious races on the global calendar. Kipkemboi finished 7th in 61:40 in atrocious conditions in only his second half marathon. In October 2021, Kipkemboi debuted over the 21.1km with a 6th place in Nairobi.
Although a relative newcomer to the global racing scene, Kipkemboi caught the eye of the road running fraternity after his runner up spot in the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K in 2021. Prior to that and his 6th place in Nairobi, Kipkemboi had quietly been moving through the ranks. He debuted in the athletics world as an 18-year-old in 2018 with a 9th place at the Kenyan U20 trials in the 10 000m, clocking 29:13.8 in Nairobi. In 2019 he finished 5th in those very same trials. With the Covid Pandemic shutting down international racing and as a relative unknown, Kipkemboi had no racing to look forward to until the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K.
Now the budding star is back and is all business for the 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K on May 15. “I am looking at running a 27 low and want to win,” said Kipkemboi from Kenya. “I have been training hard here in Kericho (West Kenya – 2002m altitude) and my coaches, Peter Kirui and Sammy Bii (coach of the Kenyan marathon team last Olympics) are very happy with where I am, so I am confident for Cape Town.”
Also in the mix is Ethiopia’s Mogos Tuemay. The 24-year-old clocked a 27:50 in the Herzogenaurach 10km (Germany) in 2021, but of greater significance is his 60:11 half marathon time in Napoli in February this year. Tuemay clocked 27:23.49 over 10 000m and 13:10.04 (5000m) in 2019 and clearly has a good turn of speed. The fast and flat course of the race will suit his racing style to the T and Kipkemboi and defending champion, Ebenyo will ignore him at their peril.
Machine Mashele looking to upset the apple cart
While the foreign force will be looking to stamp their authority on the race, South Africa’s 10km champion and Olympian, Precious Machine Mashele (running in the colours of Boxer Athletics Club) will be looking to upset their plans.
“I am looking for a top three,” said Mashele. “I know these guys are fast. I know I will be in good shape and I know how they race after seeing them (Ebenyo and Kipkemboi) in action in Cape Town last year. My legs were a bit heavy then after a long season and a hard Absa RYC DURBAN 10K (incorporating the SA Championships that saw him defend his title in an epic showdown with friend and rival, Stephen Mokoka), but I will be fresher this year. I am running the ASA 5000m championships (Saturday 23 April) and then the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K, so I will be on fresh legs.”
Mashele had an incredible 2021. First missing out on running a marathon due to the Pandemic, he intended to try and qualify for the Olympics, then turning his focus to trying to qualify for the 5000m. On his 6th attempt, at literally the ‘hour before midnight’ Mashele hit the qualifying mark. What made that run so remarkable was that it was held in a stadium that had suffered a power failure. The coaches and athletes at the meeting parked their cars in such a way so that their headlights would show Mashele the way.
On 17 October, Mashele missed out on joining the sub 60 club (Half Marathon) by literally a second when he finished 4th in the Poznan Half Marathon in Poland, clocking exactly 60minutes. There was no stopping him though in the Absa RYC DURBAN 10K when he powered away from Mokoka in the final kilometre to successfully defend his national 10km title and with that become the new king of the road over the shorter distances (Mokoka still reigns supreme in the Marathon).
But the long season took its toll, and he was only able to finish 9th in the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 12K. 2022 though is a different story. Mashele is fresh and hungry. “I’m looking for top three and in Durban I want 27(min),” said Mashele.
With more names still to be announced, the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K is shaping up to be the hottest race on the South African circuit and will have athletes and races the world over keep an eye on the happenings in the Mother City come Sunday 15 May.

Dis-Chem set to offer FREE Rapid Antigen tests to all unvaccinated runners at all Absa RUN YOUR CITY events in 2022!
The organizers of South Africa’s award-winning road running series, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY (RYC) Series, are excited to announce that in continuing its partnership with Dis-Chem Pharmacies in 2022, the events will once again offer free Rapid Antigen tests to all non-vaccinated runners.
As published in the Government Gazette on 22 March 2022, the latest Covid-19 Protocols with regard to events clearly state that entrants either need to be fully vaccinated or present a negative Covid-19 Certificate obtained no more than 72 hours before the date of the event. This test must be recognized by the World Health Organization.
“We are excited to once again partner with Dis-Chem Pharmacies as the official healthcare partner of the Absa RYC Series in 2022,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RYC Series. “We are happy to confirm that, with Dis-Chem Pharmacies as our partner, the event will cover the full cost of the rapid antigen test. To make the process as convenient as possible for the non-vaccinated runners, the test will be conducted by Dis-Chem professionals at Race Pack Collection for all events. We are excited to return to actual events and can’t wait to welcome runners to the start line in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg ready to #RunYourCity.”
“Rapid antigen testing is useful in specific contexts, such as these, always with the aim of reducing the transmission of COVID-19. Timely and accurate diagnostic testing will allow us to rapidly identify the presence of COVID-19 which will contribute to a safe racing environment for all participants,” says Lizeth Kruger, clinic executive at Dis-Chem Pharmacies.

Female Running stars announced for the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Following the recent announcement of Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (Kenya), one of the world’s leading male stars, the organisers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series have announced the participation of two global female super stars: Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat (both from Uganda) at the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May 2022.
Chesang and Chelangat will return to South Africa after a very successful (and exciting) display of racing at the 2018 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series.
“Having these two athletes back in SA to run in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K is really exciting both for the event and the sport of road running in SA and Africa – they are two of the super stars of international road running!” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and founder of SA’s leading 10km road running series. “Our goal is to have the World’s best runners compete against SA’s best on home soil, and ensure the event is a truly international event. Having Stella and Mercyline run in the Cape Town event is enormously exciting!”
Chesang won the 2018 Commonwealth Games 10 000m title. Shortly after this victory, Chesang made her SA debut when she took on the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K. A surprising upset saw her being beaten by Jackline Chepngeno (Kenya) at this event. Chesang returned to South Africa in October that year, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series bug had clearly bitten, to smash a stellar field in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K with a winning time of 31:14, smashing both the women’s course record and the Ugandan National 10km record, while coming within one second of the SA All Comers record. This was also a 30 second improvement on her personal best.
Picking up where she left off in 2018, in 2019 Chesang set personal bests in the 5000m (15:00.72), 10 000m (31:38.70) and over 12km (38:09 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K). After a three-year hiatus due to the Covid Pandemic, and the birth of her son in April 2020, Chesang opened her 2022 campaign with a fast 35:18 in the brutal Agnes Tirop Cross Country Classic in Eldoret in February this year. Eldoret lies at an altitude of 2100m.
“It is good to be back racing. Covid hit us hard, and we have missed the running and racing scene,” said Chesang from her training base in Kapchorwa, Uganda. “I’m looking forward to returning to Cape Town for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. That was my first ever race in South Africa and I have fond memories of the race. I am wiser, fitter and stronger and expect to have a really good run on 15 May.”
Joining Chesang will be fellow Ugandan friend and rival, Mercyline Chelangat. The two have met on four occasions in races with the score even on two wins each. In 2017 Chelangat had the upper hand beating Chesang in the Uganda 1500m (3rd and 5th) trials and placing better at the World Cross Country Championships (12th and 18th). But Chesang found her form in 2018 winning the Commonwealth Games 10 000m title where Chelangat finished third. The pair met again in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K later that year and again Chesang came up trumps, winning the race in 31:14 with Chelangat, the defending champion, second in 31:33.
Chelangat will be confident entering the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K after her win in the Poznan Polmaraton Half Marathon on 3 April where she clocked 69:24. The conditions which Chelangat faced in Poland where incredibly challenging. A strong head wind, cold temperatures and no pace makers left Chelangat with hard work to do on her own after she dropped the field after 15km. Until 18km she was on track for the course record, but the challenging conditions proved to be just too much in the final stages.
“I had a great run in Poland and know that I am close to my best shape. By May 15 I expect to be in the kind of shape that had me run my 31:33 PB over 10km and even better,” said Chelangat who ran her PB at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K when she finished second behind Chesang in 2018.
Leading the South African charge will be seven-time South African champion and fourth fastest South African ever over the half marathon distance, Glenrose Xaba. Now coached by Caster Semenya and running in the colours of Boxer Athletics Club, Xaba has unfinished business at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. On four consecutive occasions, Xaba has won the SA 10 000m title. With her 60:26 half marathon PB, Xaba is more than capable of going faster than her 32:45 PB set at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2019, and with the international field already lined up against her, this will be the perfect time for her to get close to, if not under the 32min barrier.
“With Stella (Chesang) and Mercyline (Chelangat) leading the attack and SA elites such as Glenrose Xaba ready to counter, SA’s road running community will be treated to world class racing on their doorstep, further cementing the event as Cape Town’s most prestigious road running event.”

Global running star sets sights on Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
One of the current global stars of the sport of running, Daniel Simiu Ebenyo from Kenya, returns to the Mother City on Sunday 15 May 2022 to take on the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
As the 3rd fastest 10K runner in the world at present, Ebenyo is one of the stars of world athletics, and is already being mentioned as the main threat to Joshua Cheptegei, the world’s leading 10km runner. Fellow runners and spectators will hope to see Ebenyo come close to the fastest 10km ever run on African soil, when he takes on the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
“It’s a tremendous coup to have Daniel return to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K,” says Michael Meyer, founder of Africa’s leading 10K road running series. “Our aim is to have our thousands of participants stand on the start line with the world’s best runners, and Daniel certainly fits that bill. To have the third fastest 10K runner on the planet run in Cape Town is a huge thrill and privilege and will further cement the event as Cape Town’s most prestigious road running event.”
Ebenyo has made some emphatic statements already in 2022. He opened his season on 9 January at the Valencia 10km, winning in his usual front running style and in an almost solo effort, run in windy conditions. Ebenyo proceeded to decimate a quality field, winning in a time of 26:58, then the fastest in the world.
Since then only two runners have run faster. Only Joshua Cheptegei, no stranger to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, and Kenneth Renju have gone faster – with Cheptegei flying to a 26:49 in Cannes (6 March) and Renju winning the Lille 10km in 26:57 on 20 March.
That Ebenyo has a serious turn of speed is beyond question. In his first indoor season, the Kenyan competed in the Mondeville Indoor Meeting over 3000m one month to the day after this incredible 10km race. Seven Minutes, 42.93 seconds later and Ebenyo crossed the finish line in first. Three days later he was second at the Meeting Metz Moselle in Metz, France over the 3000m, clocking 7:37.86. On 20 March he was 4th at the World Indoor Championships over the 3000m – just missing out on his Personal Best by 4/100th of a second.
Few will forget how devastating Ebenyo was at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in Cape Town in November last year. At that stage a 12km race, the Kenyan set a brutal pace from the gun to storm to victory in 34:01, beating the best of what South Africa had to offer on that day.”
And now, Ebenyo is back, returning to the Mother City to take on the reset Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. In 2018 Joshua Cheptegei set the All Comers 10km Record of 27:16 in the Durban leg of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. Expect that time to go.
With his aggressive front running style, he is a big favourite to not only win the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 15 May, but also to drag an expected deep field to times faster than ever before witnessed in South Africa.
What makes Ebenyo’s pedigree so remarkable is that he has only been on the circuit for four years and already he has shown his versatility, grit and undeniable talent. Qualifying for the Olympic Games in the 5000m and being considered a serious medal contender speaks volumes to his pedigree.
Ebenyo has shown an affinity for racing on the track outdoors as well as indoors, two vastly different surfaces, and two very different types of racing even though both are on the track. To be able to translate that incredible racing ability from the track onto the roads is further evidence of the incredible talent that Ebenyo has at his disposal.
“I am looking to running fast in Cape Town on 15 May,” said Ebenyo as he was announced as the first headline name for the 2022 edition of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. “I won the 12k last year and it was windy. I want to win the 10km and set a very fast time as I know I am in great shape.”
Meyer concludes, “Daniel is a true world class running star, and he will probably be the highest ranked runner to visit Cape Town this year, over any distance. We look forward to welcoming him with open arms.”

Entries open for 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K – Jozi’s largest Heritage Day Celebration!
Entries for Jozi’s largest Heritage Day Celebration, the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY (RYC) JOBURG 10K, will open on Tuesday 05 April 2022!
Founded in 2016, the Absa RYC JOBURG 10K forms part of the award winning Absa RYC Series which currently consists of three iconic mass participation 10km road races: the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K, Absa RYC DURBAN 10K and Absa RYC JOBURG 10K.
“It’s been two years since we’ve been able to host this exciting event in Joburg,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RYC Series. “To say that we are excited to be back in 2022 would be an understatement. The Absa RYC JOBURG 10K celebrates the splendour of the City of Gold. We can’t wait to treat runners to a 10km journey that highlights iconic landmarks and features lively performances by a host of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups.”
“Although a mass participation road race, the event will also feature an exciting Contender Programme aimed at the racing snakes,” continues Meyer. “To qualify for prize money, entrants will need to apply to be part of the Contendar Category. The 2022 Absa RYC Series boasts a whopping combined prize purse to the value of R690 000. As if that isn’t enough excitement, we’ve also recently launched the long overdue SA Elite Athlete Programme aimed at providing South African runners with the opportunity to run world class times on South African soil. The programme is intended to ensure that the best South African athletes compete in the Absa RYC Series, against some of the best athletes in the world, and are rewarded for world class performances.”
“The Absa RYC JOBURG 10K is a true highlight on the SA running calendar,” adds Meyer. “Entrants can look forward to rubbing shoulders with elite runners both local and from abroad. What better way to celebrate National Heritage Day on Saturday 24 September 2022 than by being part of the action! Jozi runners are you ready to #RunYourCity!”
“The Absa RYC Series gives participants an opportunity to connect and engage with like-minded individuals who love to take part in walking and running, whether a beginner or elite runner. The event is closely linked to Absa’s strategic intent of bringing possibilities to life for our customers and the communities we operate in. We are, therefore, proud to be part of this prestigious event which truly defines what we stand for,” says Absa Managing Executive, Geoff Lee.

Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series launches the South African Elite Athlete Programme!
Stillwater Sports, the organisers of Africa’s leading road running series, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY (RYC) Series, is proud to launch the 2022 SA Elite Athlete Programme aimed at providing South African runners with the opportunity to run world class times on South African soil. The programme is aimed at ensuring that the best South African athletes compete in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, against some of the best athletes in the world, and are rewarded for world class performances.
“We’ve been working on this exciting element of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series for quite some time and are extremely excited to make it a reality in 2022,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “The goal behind the SA Elite Athlete Programme is simply to give South Africa’s elite runners the opportunity to improve their PB’s and run world class times on home soil. We want athletes to know that they will be rewarded for hard work, focus and subsequent performance.”
Meyer believes that the SA Elite Athlete Programme is an innovative and leading programme aimed at incentivizing runners to perform throughout the year over the 10km distance.
“We will kickstart the initiative by inviting the top 30 male and top 30 female athletes on the SA Road Running Performance List to participate in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May,” continues Meyer. “The athletes will be divided into three groups, based on performance, with the event covering all participation costs of the top group of qualifiers, such as entry fee, flights, transport, accommodation and meals. From there the top 30 male and top 30 female finishers will be invited to participate in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on Sunday 10 July.”
And it is in the Durban leg where the real excitement lies, with Meyer announcing a time-based incentive scheme that will see runners rewarded on a sliding scale. “Our goal is to encourage depth of performance as well as quality of performance. Male runners will be rewarded for times ranging from a sub 30 minutes to world record time, with a fantastic incentive on offer for the first SA runner to dip under 28 minutes. On the female side, similarly, the focus will be on both depth and quality of performance, but we really want to see SA women running under 31 minutes, and then starting to attack the sub 30 minutes barrier”.
Athletes that form part of the SA Elite Athlete Programme will also be eligible to win their share in the event prize purse at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K and Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K, the combined total of which is R690 000,00.”
Adding to the excitement and status of the events, an international field of world class athletes will join the field, to ensure fast times, and exciting racing!
Meyer concludes, “As organizers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, we believe the series now has the most comprehensive Elite Athlete programme of any running event in Africa. We believe athletes are in control of their destiny, and that the programme will make it easier for athletes to determine their own reward, through their performance.
In addition, it’s the duty of events such as the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, to create opportunities for SA athletes to equip themselves, to be competitive on the world stage.”

Make your run count at the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K!
Runners can make their run count by supporting one of five local charities (Reach for a Dream, help2read, Cotlands, Cape of Good Hope SPCA and Die Burger Kinderfonds) when entering the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K that will take place in the Mother City on Sunday 15 May 2022.
“We are proud to continue supporting five of Cape Town’s remarkable charities,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “The past two years have been exceptionally tough, but these charities have persevered and continue to make a difference in the lives of so many individuals and animals. We would like to urge the running community to support one or all five charities by making a donation when entering the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K online. No donation is too small and will go a long way in enabling the charities to continue with their selfless work.”
Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams.
“Our goal and focus is to ensure that no child that has been diagnosed with a life threatening illnesses, goes without knowing the power of a dream,” says Kerry Donkin, Reach For A Dream Foundation Regional Manager. “In 2022 we hope to fulfil over 1800 dreams and aim to take our dreamers on a journey of hope through the power of a dream. It has been wonderful being a part of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Not only does this event encourage runners and walkers to stay active and healthy, it also encourages participants to give back to those in need. It speaks to the kind and generous spirits of South Africans. No donation is too small as every bit counts and will help us keep dreams alive.” For further information on Reach For a Dream please visit: www.reachforadream.org.za
A non-profit organisation, help2read’s mission is to erase illiteracy in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, one literacy lesson at a time. Since the organisation’s first one-on-one reading session in 2006, help2read has worked in over 400 schools and reached 23 000 children through their literacy programmes.
“We love that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series celebrates South Africa's diverse cities! What a fantastic way to draw attention to our wonderful cities,” says Nikki Knowler, Help2read Business Development Manager. “We are proud to be an official charity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. The event creates so much awareness for the help2read cause. We are looking forward to the unity and excitement that the day brings. For any runners looking to crowdfund for an NGO please keep help2read in mind. Any funds raised go directly to our reading support programmes which provide vital reading assistance to children who are behind in their reading.” For more information on help2read please visit: www.help2read.org
Cotlands is a registered non-profit organisation that focuses on early childhood development (ECD) with a rich 85-year history of serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see children thrive in their formative years by increasing their access to quality play-based early learning opportunities.
“Cotlands is proud to be associated with such a great fitness event where anyone and everyone can do good by running for a worthy cause,” says Natalie Frank, Cotlands Marketing Manager. “We have ECD programmes running in three of the provinces (Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng) so it is wonderful to be aligned to a sporting event that also has a national presence. The pandemic has resulted in even more young, vulnerable children with no access to early learning programmes. For us to build a brighter future for our children, we need to unite and collectively invest in access to early childhood development so that children can have the best start to life. The collective support from runners to give back to the NGO sector is so inspiring for us, as it demonstrates the public’s appreciation of the vital role that we play in servicing and developing our communities for the better.” For further information on Cotlands please visit: www.cotlands.org
Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. A registered non-profit organisation and Public Benefit Organisation, the society relies on the support of concerned individuals and corporates to continue operating.
“The Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K is an incredible event,” says Belinda Abraham, The Cape of Good Hope SPCA Spokesperson. “The Cape of Good Hope SPCA will celebrate it’s 150th anniversary on 20 May. We’re hoping that animal lovers from across the Western Cape (and surrounds) will join in on our celebration by donating R150, that is R1 for each year that we’ve been at the forefront of animal rescue. This will enable us to continue ensuring that ‘life’s a party’ for every animal that we are able to place in a loving home. That’s an average of 1000 animals every year. Of course, you can’t invite people to a party without there being something in it for them, so a very special surprise awaits everyone who donates R150 or more. We will be setting up a specific birthday page for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K were donations can easily be made. We can’t wait to see everybody out on the roads and witness the amazing spirit of Cape Town in action for animals.” For more information please visit: www.capespca.co.za
Started in 1957, Die Burger Kinderfonds is a non-profit organisation that assists children in the community that are in need of trauma counselling.
According to Suzaan Potgieter, Die Burger Kinderfonds Co-ordinator, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K is one of the most entertaining and fun running events in SA. “After two years of isolation and staying at home, it will be great to see so many people being active and enjoying themselves in the outdoors,” says Potgieter. “I am also thinking of participating this year (a first for me and my friends), so we are preparing really hard and looking forward to it. We love to see the creative ways in which people raise funds for our cause so we’d like to invite runners to share their fundraising ideas with us via Facebook, our handle is @burgerkinderfonds. We will publish a photo of them along with a description of their fundraising initiative to help generate support. We are truly thankful to each and every runner that supports us. We can’t wait to run with you at the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.” For more information please visit: https://www.facebook.com/burgerkinderfonds

The organisers of the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series are excited to announce that South Africa’s award winning road running series is now a 10km series only and will boast three exhilarating races in three cities in 2022: the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K (Sunday 15 May), Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K (Sunday 10 July) and Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K (Saturday 24 September).
“We are thrilled to announce that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series has evolved into a 10km series that will be hosted in three cities in 2022,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “We had a very successful 2021 with Absa signing as the Title Sponsor of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series.
Together with their support and other key sponsors such as PUMA and DHL, to mention just a few, we hosted two fantastic events in Durban and Cape Town amidst very strict Covid-19 regulations. This paved the way for what we have planned in 2022.”
“Celebrated nationally, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is a diverse road running series that brings together avid runners, walkers and individuals looking to live healthier lifestyles, all lining up with some of Africa’s greatest distance runners, while promising world class achievement and fun for all participants,” continues Meyer. “This year we are excited to once again take the action to the streets of the three major cities. The events will now be known as the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K and Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K. Although emphasis will be placed on hosting a mass participation road race that highlights city landmarks, includes magnificent views and features lively performances from some of the host city’s leading performing arts groups, all three events will also boast an exciting Contender Programme aimed at the racing snakes. To qualify for prize money, entrants will need to apply to be part of the Contendar Category. We can’t wait to welcome thousands of runners from across South Africa as well as elite athletes from around the world hoping to break 10km records on African soil, to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series.”
