Deep in the Knysna Forest it is freezing in the early morning hours at this time of year but you will soon warm up as you start this gem of a half marathon. The opening few kilometres are uphill and tough but the route soon settles down to a gently undulating scenic run along tree-lined gravel roads. Near the halfway mark the trees suddenly clear revealing a sweeping panoramic view of the emerald green Simola Country Estate where the serpentine Knysna River winds its way through the fairways.

This is the part of the race where concentration is essential: between the 11- and 15-kilometre markers the route plummets from the Simola hills down to sea level with a bone-crunching descent that will leave even the most seasoned quads feeling a bit wobbly. Slowing down a bit here could mean the difference between a strong finish and a tough slog to the end. The final stretch alongside the N2 is right on the bank of the stunning Knysna Lagoon. It is a totally flat last six kilometres but this part is deceptively hard because your legs get no respite from the inevitably faster pace. However, the excitement of the crowds and the atmosphere that is uniquely Knysna will get you to the finish line.

There is a festival with stalls selling food, drinks and other goods at the finish venue.
