EDITORS NOTES
Dating back to 1903, this Cape Town foot race is even older than the Comrades Marathon, although it was held only sporadically over the first few decades. Started by Spartan Harriers, the club itself was formed just two years earlier, the original 50 mile walking race set off from the Grand Parade in the city, went just beyond Simon’s Town and returned to finish in the city centre.
In essence, this is a fun walk and athletic licences are not required. However, the front-end field for most distances is becoming more and more competitive and many of the top South African walkers take part. The rules are clearly stated on the entry forms and the race is observed by judges.
Contact the organisers or check the entry forms for the starting times, starting venues and minimum age for the various distances. The distances offered are: 80-, 50-, 30-, 25-, 15-, 10- and five kilometres. Children younger than six years old can enter a fun walk on the Saturday at Canal Walk.
This community event is used to raise funds for the needy. These funds are distributed by Rotary to various charities and community organisations, including literacy projects. All walks end at 17h30 when support services are withdrawn.
