MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon - 01 May 2018

New venue to be announced - watch this space....

The Wally Hayward has been consistently ranked in a number of our surveys as a well organised and well-presented event. This historic race will be run for the 41st time in 2017. This will be the ninth time the event is held as a memorial run. It is a tribute to a great runner and a great man, Wally Hayward. With the combined size of the field, which exceeded 9,500, early arrival at the venue is essential.

A family dog walk to raise funds in aid of the SPCA Tshwane with a kiddie's 1km race.

The Wally was first run on 30 June 1977 over 42.2 km, starting & finishing at Hoërskool Verwoerdburg. A 21.1 km, 10 km, 5km fun run and a 1 Km kiddies run were later added. Since 2005, the Wally has started and finished at Hoërskool Zwartkop, in Centurion.

Wallace Henry (Wally) Hayward lead an eventful life as an athlete.

He started his running career seriously in 1925 at the age of 17. As with most athletes who start out running, he kept his racing for the first 5 years to the shorter distances, never racing more than 10 miles. (16 kilometres.) In 1930, at the age of 21, he took the plunge and entered the Comrades Marathon, having never run more than 37 miles (once).

Being a novice, Wally shot to the front and had a 29 minute lead by the halfway mark. These days this would be considered suicidal. But, despite having to walk up all the hills in the second half, and having his lead reduced by a minute every kilometre in the closing stages, he hung on courageously and managed to win by 37 seconds (in 7:27:26) one of the closest finishes in the history of the Comrades Marathon.
