Each year a new adventure is sought and designed. At the time of writing we were unsure of the final route, but by way of example we give the first two stages and an older version of the third as a guide.
Distance: 33 kilometres. The first day is arguably the signature stage and is the one that defines the entire event. The route starts and finishes at the Houw Hoek Inn. There is a fair variety of terrain which includes some steep technical climbs, horse trails, jeep track and single track. This stage boasts sweeping views of the Groenlandberg Mountain Range.
Distance: 34 kilometres. Day two is by tradition the hardest and the longest day. Prepare yourself for the event's toughest climbing through the beautiful MTO forest areas of the region. This stage starts off at Ongegund Lodge and the route follows a direct path to connect with the infamous Gantouw Pass. The ascent is special and be sure to look out for the original wagon wheel tracks and take some time to enjoy the views from the top. The day’s work is done when you reach the Paul Cluver Amphitheatre.
Distance: 25 kilometres. At the time of writing the final day’s route was undecided. This is the 2014 stage, by way of example. The third day may well be the easiest, but there remains some stretch in the event and work still to be done. The climb from Arabella takes you to magnificent views of the ocean, the valley and Kleinmond below. With the mountain running now done, the trail finally starts heading down towards the finish through one of the largest protea cultivating farms in the country. This is but one more of the many rare and beautiful moments of a journey well done.
