This epic race starts in Lady Grey and for the first 65 kilometres both races share the same route. The route climbs sharply out of Lady Grey and takes you on a run that is sometimes made up of a combination of hiking trails and mountain running, sometimes over terrain devoid of paths and trails. Once you reach the compulsory stop at Balloch Cave, you have about 65 kilometres of the race. This marks the end of the Lite run.
Once you have done your medical and given the all clear by the doctor, it is upwards and onwards as you take on the challenge of Balloch Wall, a climb with a vertical ascent of over 500 metres in just three kilometres. Many will now be operating in the dark as night fall will have replaced the harsh African sun. Navigating through the Bridal Pass from Edgehill to the turn can be tricky. The final climb down from Halston’s is technical and is made difficult by fatigue, but you are buoyed by the fact that you are now heading to the finish at Wartrail Country Club.
