Nedbank remains a committed supporter and sponsor of local running. Running provides an opportunity to touch the lives of all South Africans without experiencing cultural, racial or financial barriers. Running is truly a sport for all.
Nedbank's’ involvement in running is aimed at addressing three requirements:
Nedbank Running Club
In early 2008 Nedbank launched the Nedbank Running Club (NRC), with 13 branches based in12 cities around the country to bring running enthusiasts together at a social and competitive level while identifying and guiding talented individuals to excel at the sport.
The NRC now has a membership of over 3 300 people. The branches are strategically located in the Boland, Gauteng (North and Central), Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, South Western Districts, Western Cape, Vaal Triangle and Central North West.
Nick Bester, a past winner of the Comrades Marathon and an incredible multidiscipline athlete, serves as the club's national manager. Bruce Fordyce, one of South Africa's leading proponents of distance running and winner of nine Comrades Marathons and three London to Brighton races, is the Public Relations Manager of the NRC and CEO of NRC Central Gauteng.
Nedbank Green Dream Team
The Dream Team consists of a mixture of top South African athletes who compete in all the recognised distances as well as many of South Africa's Ultra marathons. This elite squad has been individually selected after consultation with experienced managers and coaches. Many are world class runners in their own right and athletes such as Bongmusa Mthembu, Ludwick Mamabolo, Claude Moshiywa, Charne Bosman, Irvette Van Zyl, Rutendo Nyahora and Sibusiso Nzima form part of the team.
The Green Dream Team is supplemented by a talented squad of promising young athletes who are nurtured by the NRC.
Nedbank has been a proud major co-sponsor of the worlds ultimate human race since 2006, although the brand was previously supported by NBS and Peoples Bank in the years before their renaming and inclusion in Nedbank.
Despite the presence of a talented international contingent, the run was a triumph for South African men, who took the first three places the first time this has happened since 1992 and a total of seven spots in the top 10. In 2013 Nedbank scooped the Discovery Sports Industry Award for best live sporting experience for the Nedbank Green Mile and spectator spot. The location alternates between Kloof (for the down run) and Camperdown (for the up run), both situated next to the national freeway 26 kilometres from the end of the up and down races.
This iconic Nedbank Green Mile and spectator spot is free to all supporters and provides a welcoming place to watch the drama unfold, while creating an electrifying atmosphere of over 1, 6 kilometres in length, giving an uplifting boost to runners when they need it most.
Nedbank Runners' Guide, Nedbank Winter Race Dates and Nedbank Summer Race Dates
