Editor's Notes:
The Township2Township Marathon is as much a run through South Africa’s history as it is a race that unites eThekwini’s communities through spectator involvement. The race aims at both promoting three long-established Durban Townships and developing athletics in these societies.

The marathon is run between Durban’s two oldest townships KwaMashu and uMlazi, established in 1959 under the Group Areas Act during the apartheid era. The route goes through Umkhumbane, a suburb where Coloureds and Africans used to live together in much the same way as they did in Johannesburg’s Sophiatown and Cape Town’s District Six. During the 1950s many families were forcibly removed from Umkhumbane and were resettled in the two townships.
